I'm not suggesting Huberdeau wants out already or will, just that Drury was never happy here right from the get go.

"Huberdeau showing subtle signs of annoyance with Eric Francis" makes this thread a lot less inflammatory and still gets people reading your article...just sayin.

And even makes him extremely relatable.

Right, but that fact was not connected to his somber demeanor at his press introduction. Had he been thrilled to be in Calgary, his public reaction would have looked pretty much the same. The point here being that we should not attempt to draw conclusions about a person's thoughts or feelings from their appearance in the media. It's no different from posters drawing sweeping conclusions about Treliving's personal feelings and his role in hiring Sutter exclusively from his press conference via zoom that same day.

I think Huberdeau has been very upfront with his feelings, when he was traded, he looked shocked as you would expect, and he explained that he was mad at the time and as time settled, he was ok with it.

Now you look at his interaction with media he is always joking and smiling and positive. I don't know how anyone could conclude he look upset.

I think those range of emotions are very relatable anyone would be pissed getting traded from the only team they have known at 11PM.

This is the real nugget here.

Why is Huby unhappy with sutter’s motivation tactics? Do we know what specifically? The poop comment thing seems too outrageous to be mad at, so much so it’s hard to believe that Huby is butthurt (lol) about it.

But what else then? Comments to media? Attitude in general? Linemates? Ice time?

I’d be very curious what about the situation is rubbing Huby the wrong way here. Does he just think Sutter is a jerk and prefers a players coach? I doubt he’d be having more fun in Florida with Maurice. He’s not exactly known and Mr Personality.

I think Huberdeau has been an absolute class act, from the moment he arrived in Calgary.

And he has taken nothing but heat since he got here - from the fans (for a slow start), from the media (mostly embarrassing), and from the coach (rightly or wrongly trying to do his job).

I feel a bit bad for the guy, and while it hasn't been a huge deal so far, I am concerned that if it continues, it will start to affect his desire to be here.

If he is frustrated by anything it would probably be his usage, he has gone from almost 20 minutes a game to playing 16.

He also played for Quenneville, so I don't think having a hard coach is going to bother him much.

I think articles like these are the ones that would cause said subtle signs of annoyance - when journalists start writing (based on pure conjecture and assumptions) regarding the player's personal feelings and personal happiness.

I'd be pretty frustrated as well coming off a 115 point season and watching Trevor Lewis play more than me. There was not a single occasion last year in which Huberdeau played less than the 14:25 he received last game.

Tkachuk and Valimaki have all but confirmed that they did not see eye to eye with Sutter - and not all players & coaches have to, but a certain respect needs to be mutually maintained and I am not sure these two have got off to the best off starts in that regard. In my opinion Sutter has failed miserably at integrating Huberdeau into the lineup and has not been overly supportive of him publicly.

In respect to the other superstars in the league it's hard not to see that Huberdeau is currently being vastly underutilized. We would all be criticizing Jon Cooper (or laughing at him) if he was playing Pierre-Edouard Bellmare as much as Nikita Kucherov at even strength - so I don't think it should be any different here.

It's still early days - and these issues are certainly being overblown, but at the same time I think Sutter deserves some criticism for his handling of the player.

Sutter isn't for everyone, and he will surely have a shelf life like they all do.

But I think you have to live with that; it's part of the package.

The Flames had player's coaches and a country club and a lot of erratic play for years. Sutter has seemingly turned that around.

For one I'm willing to ride out a star player taking time to adjust to a guy with a long history of winning - and that's not to hammer on Huberdeau who isn't actually complaining at all.

The guy wins. Winning is fun.

Add in the fact that I sure get the feeling that Calgary isn't the biggest destination for the top minds in coaching and you have me happy the guy was extended and not going anywhere.

If his shelf life expires I'd even consider moving the core and getting a reset on the shelf!

Yeah, if there is any issue, they'll work it out. Neither is going anywhere anytime soon and they both know it.

Huberdeau had 20:15 in the 5-4 loss to Seattle. He also had 0 points, 2 shots on goal, +/- 0, and 1 penalty. The next game, he had 18:36 in a 4-1 loss to Nashville where he had 0 points, 4 shots, and was -1. Two games in a row where he was given ample ice-time, but he didn't do anything with it.

His ice-time will go back up as he continues to adjust and his performance improves. Until then, Sutter has been pretty fair.

The league's leading scoring had a near identical two game performance. It's meaningless.

We rank bottom five in finishing this year for a reason and it's in large part due to underutilizing our top end talent, and overplaying our middling vets.

Might be a framing problem, you feel a lot closer to the media than most of us do for obvious reasons, and the rest of us feel closer to the team than to the media because that's what we care about. Probably an indictment of poor reading skills as a group, but you probably need to pander to that a little bit, change the thread title that's your intent "Huberdeau showing signs of annoyance with Calgary Media".
I think you nailed it. This is the first post of mine that was taken way out of context and became very confusing. I can see why/how.

This thread was a roller-coaster.

I personally just think that Huberdeau was trying to be cheeky shoe-horning the "interesting" line into his first answer. He all but winked at Eric during it.

I'm fine with him leaving when his shelf life is up and the reality is that most of the contracts the Flames just signed these players to will be extremely difficult to move so this core isn't going anywhere for better or worse. I think he's a great coach but as a fan I feel he also has a shelf life as a head coach I want leading my team. Once the results aren't there he becomes exhausting and his grumpy pants act starts getting old. We all know in real life he's a nice guy and I just wish he could at times ditch the grumpy old man act.
