Coleman’s been a disappointment in year 2. He doesn’t hurt you and is a quality bottom six player but that contract. Woof.

LW #1 - Huberdeau - Good. Slow start though.
RW #1 - Toffoli - This not good enough.
C #1 - Lindholm - It increasingly looks like this is not good enough as his offensive production as a C seems to have been a product of playing with Johnny and Chucky. Horrible start to the season and the biggest problem facing even strength production in my eyes.
LW #2 - Mangiapane - Good. Slow start.
RW #2 - Dube - This is not good enough.
C #2 - Kadri - This is perfect. Proven to be a Stanley Cup quality #2 Centre.
LW #3 - Coleman - Good.
RW #2 - Lewis - This is not good enough
C #3 - Backlund - Good.
LW #4 - Lucic - Not good enough.
RW #4 - Ritchie - Good.
C #4 - Rooney - Good enough.
The forward depth is bad. There are players playing above where they should be on every line. C #1 is the most glaring problem to start the season in my eyes though. If Lindholm really can't produce without Johnny and Chucky, this team isn't going anywhere.

He just simply is not that good. I've never really understood why there was offensive hype for him. He's a third liner at best, and shouldn't be expected to produce offense.

Not sure how he deserves a Good ranking in anyone’s eyes.
Defensively he has been shockingly inept in his own zone a number of times leading to goals that did not have to happen.
Weak on board battles again. Constantly falling over.
On pace for 12 goals, 32 points. Missing absolute gifts like last night doesn’t help. That was an easier bury than Toffoli’s. One of his two goals was also a gift from Kadri I believe doing all the work.
Oh yeah and he just signed a massive multi-year contract.
To me he is the biggest disappointment of the season, but not unexpected tracking how his goals dropped off latter half of last year.

I think Coleman is fine, and in this cap world, that is just what middle 6 guys get paid. That said the term is brutal. I just hate paying middle 6 guys until they're 35.

I think he’s massively overpaid as the guy is a plug offensively. You look at what the Oilers get out of Hyman and it’s no comparison. It’s just unfortunate that the Flames have had to resort to free agency for a player like this and girls like Rooney. They need to start brining these players out of their farm system. It’s part of the reason the team is in salary cap trouble.

That was a little expected. I am hoping he gets out of the funk. Kind of glad we didn’t sign him to a 7/8 year deal now if this is the Mangiapane we’re getting.
It’s still early though. Have to keep in mind Johnny isn’t here driving the offense. He was the steering wheel and eased a lot of pressure from the middle 6 to provide secondary scoring. Right now we’re all just trying to point the finger. Everyone is struggling

Hyman is playing with McDrai to be fair
Coleman is in more of a shut down role

The Flames shouldn't panic, but man this team just lacks gamebreakers that it's hard to believe this is a group that can truly compete for the Cup.
It's also disappointing that these first 1 or 2 seasons with Huberdeau/Kadri are likely this team best shot at winning over the next 8 year and this is how they are performing.
It's likely that all this team will be is one that is on the playoff bubble. That's not the direction this team should have gone if they actually want to win.

its obvious many of the Flames forwards are struggling...
Not sure why, however they don't look like a dangerous offensive team
More of a tight checking team that will need the bounces to win tight games

Really good game against a good team that is currently on fire. Flames were absolutely their equals in that game - missed nets from Toffoli, Mangiapane, and Dube were the difference. On to the next game against another red hot team.
Playing well the last few games and not getting the results - they are going to go on a heater when they break out.
I thought that was Ruzicka's best game as a Flame, by magnitudes. I have never really seen a legit NHLer in him until last night.
Toffoli has been among the best forwards, year to date. Mangiapane is colder than February in Winnipeg.
Vladar was very solid, I can't remember the last time I was this confident with a backup in net.
I am not at all worried about this team - I think they are going to build through the season and be a nightmare for other teams in the playoffs.

I have no firm opinion, but I took a look at Coleman's comparables on capfriendly. I searched players making between 4.5M and 5M over the age of 25. Interestingly enough he is right at the bottom for point production, but I think his status as a PKer helps raise him up a little. I don't think his contract is outstandingly bad, but it is money that could have been better spent.
spoiler for size.

Yup. I really liked their game last night, but there were 2 bad things: faceoffs and the PP. Give Boston credit, their PK is probably the strongest in the league (I know they are #1 in the stats currently).
As for faceoffs, it has been an up and down year, but last night they got schooled.

FWIW I think that all the pissing and moaning here is a lot too soon. We've had two key players out of the lineup...and I'd argue that's actually three. Tanev and Hubey ... and Ollie. Kylington was a fast transition guy in the back end and I think they miss that considerably. Too often they get trapped and cycled on.
And the inability to finish (how many semi-open nets last night did they miss?) is another key issue.
I'm OK with how they've played the last bit. They've been snakebit and haven't been able to close it out...a couple of dumb penalties (and untimely at the end of games) and some plain crap bounces.
I'm not that worried. Yet.

Two missed wide open nets. That’s the difference.

They scored a goal 1 second after the PP expired and missed open nets on two others (unless I am remembering the Mangiapane one wrong)
0/6 is a little misleading

Dube isn't paid to be more than a third liner, I don't have a problem if he's not putting up big numbers. Mangiapane on the other hand has been a disapointment so far. And Coleman I thought was a massive overpayment immediately after he got signed especially considering the term he got.

Powerplay Quarterback

Not sure how anyone can not be a little worried at this point. The team is 7 straight losses deep in the first quarter of the season. That's atrocious.
Will there be some positive regression in normalizing GA amd GF, probably. But that still makes us a middle wild card team with no elite talent. Add on to the fact that we have long term contracts will multiple guys going deep into their 30s.
The flames need these next two seasons to be a success. We do not have a long window here. 7 straight losses in the first quarter is very concerning.
