But the Flames gave Mullen away at a stage of his career when he could still score 30-40 goals in a season and contribute to a Stanley Cup win for a draft pick that never came close to the NHL.

His best season and playoffs and cup win was with the Flames and they got him from St. Louis
He also asked to be traded out east for family reasons

yes, teams never know until after...you put in a claim and hope nobody ahead of you does. Only Arizona put in a claim in this case.

And Cup wins with the Penguins. It was a lousy trade of a great player.

They already factored age and potential in. If Valimaki was 26 and undrafted, he would be fighting for a spot in Rapid City.

Word at the time was that Mullen wanted out of Calgary. It was said that he and McCrimmon were the ringleaders in the team quitting on Terry Crisp during the 1990 playoffs.

It's like if I gave you the choice of 50% chance of winning $100 or a 10% chance of winning $100,000. Assuming you're not in a rough financial position, the correct decision is typically to take the option with a higher expected value.
|
Valimaki had a high ceiling. I don't think his ceiling is any higher than Mackey's at this point, and his floor seems to be quite a bit lower. It is unfortunate as it seems injuries and perhaps confidence issues have derailed him as a higher end prospect.

Which for some reason has been a big part of this franchise’s history. Quitting on the coach.

This happens to all teams.

It was still a terrible trade - a consistent 30-40 goal scorer for a magic bean.

Seriously? If you really think Valimaki doesn't have a higher ceiling than Mackey, I really don't know what to say. He always has had a higher ceiling and is clearly showing it right now.

It looks like Val might be slowly losing favour in Arizona. Tonight, he played 10:32, after playing 8:37 last game. The 3 games prior were 15:16, 12:19, and 11:15. In the span of these 5 games, Val has 1 assist, and is -5. In 4 of those games, Arizona used 7 D. Not sure if he's trying to play through an injury....

I think it primarily has to do with Chychrun coming back from injury. We'll see what happens. From my vantage point he hasn't been bad, he's just been used as the 7D.

Maybe he just is what he is; a bottom pairing guy on a bad team and not in the top 6 on a good team. There was a lot of appointing him as a decent NHL defenceman after like 5-10 games in this thread.
Hope for his sakehe has it figured out and can stick in the league.

I think if you're the 7th D on a team like the Arizona Coyotes, doesn't that put you in the same class as "glorified AHLer"?

I wouldn’t be surprised if he found himself as the late UFA signing each year finding himself on a team in need of defensive help. And honestly no shame in being that NHL journeyman.
At the same time the last Flames captain was only cementing himself as more than an NHL player at around the same age and Valimaki has “excuses” for his poor development due to injuries.

This was bound to happen, as the Coyotes are allocating the ice time to Chychrun to pump his tires. Also doesn’t help they’ve got Ghost and Moser to give ice time too.

I noticed he was at the bottom of the pile in the Calgary game for xGF% at 29.4% when I did the game story. He was then 18% in Edmonton and then 41% at home to Boston. Much better in his last game.
Arizona can be out played though so probably better to look at relative numbers.
He was -19% in the Calgary game and -26% in the Edmonton games ... so clearly a struggle, +16% in the last two games.
I think he's an NHLer, especially on a team not heading to the playoffs, but maybe not the player that he looked to be with the new guy smell on him. Happens. Wish him well, good dude.

I didn't think they released that info, as to how many teams put in a claim. I thought they only announced the successful claimant?
