Depends on what requirements there will be along with paying the $20/month. If ponying up money is the only requirement, then I can see trolls and fake accounts spending to get the blue check mark too, making it worthless.

Reports say Musk has asked them to revisit the old Vine code and see if it could be resurrected.

At this point I'm just hoping as we speak other people are coming up with a decent replacement for when I eventually move on from twitter.

I never understood why Twitter shelved Vine. Was it hugely unprofitable for them or something? No long-term prospects for investors?

Look at today's Tik Tok dominated landscape. Vine was like Sears Catalog to today's Amazon.

I'd forgotten all about Vine. Seems Twitter was ahead of the pack there

Did Twitter eliminate the ability to block people? I am suddenly seeing crap posts, and when I go to block them, it appears they already were.

They were ahead of the pack but it was easy to copy by Instagram and Snapchat, and YouTube was trying to get into the game as well (though ironically wouldn't really get into it the same way until half a decade later). Vine wasn't 'on the up' when they discontinued it, they were bleeding users and Twitter's growth had plateaued, so the focus seemed more on getting the primary business back on track rather than trying to bring people back to a dying platform. Vine was basically jetsam in Twitter's wake at that point. Most of the changes they were making were basically trying to shift popular Vines directly to Twitter to boost traffic.

Who knows what Vine could have become if it wasn't looped in with Twitter at that point and got to adapt as it's own app.

Charging sports and news reporters, essentially the blue check mark crowd. (Not to get the check mark but if you qualify for a check mark a fee associated with using the platform to disseminate information likely makes sense.

TSN and ESPN drive tonnes of traffic for free to their site.

Regular users not so much.

So now famous/popular/verified people, who are the backbone of why people join Twitter, have to produce all the content AND pay for the privilege?

Yeah no.

Expand Blue capabilities, allow for and ad-free subscription, and pay advertisers for algorithmic-based advertising. Other platorms have no problem doing it and make money, Twitter can too.

Wanna get Musk crazy? Maybe Twitter users who also pay subscription can get a discount on EV charging stations or access to a super-charger, or turn the damn thing into an AMA-like rewards system that gets you discounts in actual retail places. Maybe even cheaper seats on a Hyperloop!

It's funny because it was in reply to this tweet. If a millionaire like Stephen King won't even pony up some cash to reach an audience, it doesn't bode well for others. With our company account I'm not convinced we would pay anything, as we only tweet a couple times a month. Gonna have to look at some metrics here.

At the end of the day it's all about selling your brand. Sports and news reporters will likely just expense the $20/month to be paid by their employers. If a guy like King doesn't want to pay out of his pocket then he has to weight the pros and cons and if it matters to his bottom line. None of this matters to be as I don't have a Twitter account. I'm just kind of fascinated with all this as I feel we are seeing a bit of a meltdown of the richest man on the planet.

Yes - they do drive traffic - but who gains from this.

If I'm the best poster on this site and 25% of the people visiting here are just here to read my amazing posts - why would you charge me money to bring people to this site? And why would I pay it?

And if Bingo decides to delete all my posts because I don't pay his fee - he's just going to annoy the 25% of people who are visiting this site to read my posts.

Some perspective. Seems like Musk is flailing badly here.

You’re really unhinged by this aren’t you? Twitter was so much better when it censored free speech wasn’t it? What do you care if he charges for verification?

stopping the spread of baseless lies, misinformation and conspiracy theories is not censoring free speech.

For a small fee Twitter will soon have premium free speech.

What was censored on Twitter that you think should have been disseminated as much as on some other platforms? The fact that WS and Rebel still exist there, I am sure fulfills all of your needs.

Considering every piece of regurgitated garbage he spams CP with is from Twitter, it’s a pretty rich statement.
