Hailey isn't leaving. She's been re-assigned to cover women's hockey as her full time beat.

Overall, it doesn't seem like a RIF. More like a lot of redistribution.
I agree with some....not as enthralled with the hockey coverage lately. But the premier league, MLB, NFL, and golf have been decent. Close to canceling. I liked Haynes in the flames seat.

Hailey is covering Womens hockey full time now I believe.

Ya. I was typing too fast. Corrected it now. I know she is going national. As to the rest of my hopefully more coherent post was getting at....why all the change? People aren't getting fired en masse, but more shifted around. Is content going to get better?

Seems like growing pains with a startup news org that's now owned by the NY Times. Some of the moves appear to align to the writer's interests (like the Tampa beat writer moving closer to family and Hailey taking on a more prominent role nationally on the NHL and women's hockey beat).

The Athletic just introduced ads. For a paid service. The week after my subscription auto-renewed.

If it's not intrusive and ensures the publication can continue to pay for talent (and doesn't fold), then I'm OK with it. It's still good value (if you're not paying full rate like I did by letting my sub auto-renew).

Magazines that are paid for have ads. We pay for our seats at Flames games but still get bombarded with ads. They're pretty ubiquitous. Without ads, they would have to charge you more.

Just bumping this to get people's opinions on Julian McKenzie? With only one writer covering the Flames, he just doesn't really do it for me. Luckily I'm only paying $1 per month.
I recently found another thread on The Athletic and one poster linked an article where the journalist was embedded with the Brampton Beast for a three-game road trip. Sensational reporting, wish there was more of this stuff.

I subscribe to The Athletic for the features, so I'd say that's been lacking. I'm not really interested in game coverage or breaking down practice stuff. Plenty of that out there for free, including in real-time after the games.
But I think it's important to give anyone new, in any job, time to find their feet. I haven't covered sports day to day, but reporting takes time to build relationships that typically lead to more interesting stories.
I'm assuming every Flames reporter checks this site regularly (in some cases, they also use it to sell their wares), so what would you like to see from those covering the team? What's missing?

In terms of content, McKenzie is pumping out his articles well enough. Personally, I'm just not a big fan of his style.
But where's the feature on Dustin Wolf? Can he dive deeper into why Pelletier didn't ever look like making the big team? With the Wranglers in town surely these kinds of pieces can be done too.
How about a chat with Valimaki? Is he angry at the organisation, is he happy he's playing NHL minutes? But as I type this I see Scorpion has put out an article on Juuso.
For the site as a whole, as I mentioned the story of an ECHL team's stinky, cramped bus taking them to three games in three days is the kind of article I want to see more of.

The Lucic piece was good and that's kind of what I hoped to see given his media access to the team. Julian is solid, but doesn't 'jump off the page' for me the way that a Duhatschek or George Johnson article can. They understand that they're crafting a tale with their articles, not delivering a facts/statistics-driven news report.

That's a high bar with those two. Writing is a craft and they have much, much more experience. I think Julian is solid on the various podcasts he appears on, and have given those more of a listen than I've read his Athletic stuff.
The Lucic piece was decent, though I think the Q&A format didn't really do it for me. Good for easy consumption, I guess.
The ECHL embed is an interesting idea but not realistic for the NHL. No team would grant that kind of access.

Sorry, to clarify I didn't mean that content for the Flames or another NHL team. Just hockey in general, whether it's AHL, ECHL etc. But I take the point that the more professional the set-up, the less likely it is to happen.
I'm a (fledgling) sports journalist myself, and I love hockey, but at full price I wouldn't pay for The Athletic currently.

If you're only reading for the Flames, it's not worth it. I only read NHL and some CHL content, so even then I doubt I'm getting my money's worth. But my sub auto-renewed so here we are!

Think the problem with their Flames coverage is that the writers they bring in don't really have close sources to the team.
Go read Aaron Portzline's coverage of the Blue Jackets or Michael Russo's coverage of the Wild for example. Those articles read as reporters who actually are plugged into the team and have the sources to share insight into team management.
It is something that is only gained by covering the team for years. The closest thing we have to that IMO is Pat Steinberg.

I agree 100%. I mean no disrespect to their writers but I don't understand why they wouldn't source a reporter locally rather than moving someone to Calgary.

The Athletic is not worth the full price and is not worth it if you are only getting it for Flames coverage. I have cancelled my membership 2 years in a row and they have come back with a 50% discount to renew and I have but if they don’t give me that option I would walk. I follow the Raiders in the NFL and fantasy football so I utilize the app for that as well as general NHL/NFL/NBA coverage. I always read Julien’s articles but read several others as well and wouldn’t pay the full price for the app.

Both of those examples are senior writers and also among the best at covering the league. The two most recent Athletic beat reporters have been younger (and theoretically cheaper) so it could be the Athletic isn't willing to invest in a senior reporter in this market. The Athletic's layoff history might also give experienced Calgary reporters pause about switching jobs.

How cheap do you expect it to be? Full price is $72 which is $6/month. That's the price of two extra large coffees these days. Sheesh.
