Hmm. I wasn’t a fan of her pieces. Seemed to piggy back on others’ inside scoops. Although it’s tough for someone new to break into a market and get juicy stories. She’s a good writer and knows the game though. With some time she probably would have been great.
What Flames reporters are breaking news? This market doesn’t have any true insiders.

Steinberg for one? Not Friedman level but gets a little access. And its not so much breaking the big news even....just some more stories generated from access to players and coaches. Ryan Leslie doesn't break stories but has interesting stuff he shares from access to the team. She didn't seem to have a lot of references to her encounters with folks from the team.

She’s covering woman’s hockey and the NHL from a national perspective. The latter would be like Duhatschek, I guess.
Shes been doing a lot more tv too
Shes been on TSN a bunch around free agency, and on the womens hockey stuff as well
I think they are kind if positioning her as the number 1 womens hockey reporter, and tsn is helping push that, shes not getting that kind of tv time nationally as just a flames media member
Yeah, coverage is waning to the point where I'm probably going to drop my subscription in September. Sorry Mirtle.
Flames - Hailey was alright but the content had taken a quality dip just from Duhatschek leaving. And now Hailey's gone. Every Flames article since the announcement has been a 10 minute zero effort report by "The Athletic Staff" (probably some intern is writing it if no one wants to attach their name to the Flames) If they don't hire Scorp or someone cool I'm dropping for sure.
Chiefs - It's ok, but ever since Seth Keysor left to work on his own SubStack (which I decided to subscribe to) the content has been lacking. Losing your statistician/video review guy really hurts, who would've thought.
MMA - Crap coverage and always has been. I can go to MMAFighting or BJPenn for better and more in depth content.
NHL - Alright, but could be better
NFL - Decent
eSports - Nonexistent

I actually don't really use The Athletic for Flames news...I have this site to cover that. I'm usually interested in reading some specific NHL writers (DownGoesBrown, Strang, Russo, Portzline, Dayal) and I find the Sports Business section of the site to be pretty good too. I find myself reading it less these days, but that just means I'm not checking it every day. It's more like a couple times a week, which I still find to be a good use of my money.

Thanks for reminding me I needed to cancel the auto-renewal on my subscription before September.
Apparently, renewals have increased to $72 per year also (although going through the cancellation process, they instantly offered a $20 renewal if I kept it).

Still lots of value in the Athletic if you follow the NHL and not just the local team. Not to mention its coverage of other sports.
Well worth it for me for the NFL coverage alone as they have two beat writers devoted to the Raiders. I don't even use it for Flames stuff and rather more the overall NHL stuff and I like their analytics.
I have no idea what the Athletic has planned for Calgary but I appreciate the support from the folks in here who mentioned my name ... that's very kind of you.
I'm always keeping my ears to the ground for anything.

What is happening at the Athletic? Sara Civ leaving but doesn't have a landing spot. Hailey leaving to go national. Julian coming here after kind of double/triple covering Habs and being an editor. Joe Smith moving from TB to Minnesota. That Kurtz guy that covered the sharks (i hate to say it but just terrible at his job) is now Islanders which happened months back.
Overall, it doesn't seem like a RIF. More like a lot of redistribution.
I agree with some....not as enthralled with the hockey coverage lately. But the premier league, MLB, NFL, and golf have been decent. Close to canceling. I liked Haynes in the flames seat.
