She doesn't care about the arena in any way. It's no mystery why she's jumping on now, it's clear that the deal is going to get done, easy points for her to start saying this now and she can turn and tell everyone how she helped get it going, and dum dums are going to fall for it.

An arena for 4 years of Smith is not a trade I'd make because she has no say, input or influence on this project.

The province didn't give any money to Edmonton I don't believe. They have nothing to do with any of this and neither does Smith.

This is the essence of politics. A politician, they say, is someone who looks for a parade and then gets in front of it.

I finally read this article - it actually brought me hope in that at least one side is trying something different if not both. I was worried that both sides would pick up where they left off with the same exact people - and that we'd inevitably endup dead in the water as before. I only hope the City listens to the experts they brought in.

I know I've been critical of both sides, especially the Flames in the past but this time I've decided to try and be more balanced as I've come to grips that some element of public money will be needed if we want a downtown arena. That and I realized there are a lot of factors about this arena deal that we as the public aren't privy to and it's pointless to make incomplete opinions.

Lets git er' done!

I still want 2 blocks further north at the Remington Jeff Davison Innovation Lot Lands. It's a rare opportunity to mitigate 150 meters of heavy rail exposure (arena south side/parkade north side - concourse spanning the tracks and probably tunnels underneath, too).

It would be pretty close to all 3 of Blue/Red/Green lines, at least 2 big city-owned parkades on 9 Ave, and plenty of surface parking to the south. And we wouldn't need to remove the beautiful trees on the current site.

And it would probably mean swapping the bus barn lands to Remington, who is at least in the RE business and more likely to make something of that parcel than the guys behind Cnext and a decade of debacle.

So the dam needs to be priority one and kind of wishy washy (willing to look at the business case) on the arena after.

I agree that the Dam absolutely needs to be funded prior to any vanity infrastructure projects. Then yeah, a business case listing benefit from provincial prospective because it would be bloody irresponsible for the province to commit money without one.

Ah, memories of swamp castle king from Holy Grail.

“I built ye a arena and then it flooded and washed it away, so I built ye another and the flood took that away too, then I built the next arena on top of the ruins and there ye have it!”

Oh thank god we got comments from Notley on this.

Well, I like seeing the diversity in responses from our two major party leaders, on a project that absolutely matters to us hockey fans and will be an important infrastructure project for the Flames for many decades going forward. That's just me though.

Right, but the political grandstanding is a waste of time.
Politics ruin everything and both sides use this project to push their agenda.
We all know how it’s going to work out, it was a done deal on paper previously.

Get on with it.

I think the NDP gov't helped extend it to include the River's District (which the arena is a part of, but not the EV)

If you you want to get something done, give it a name the rubes will get behind. Like the peace bridge.

Did the previous designs include underground/indoor parkade? Rogers place has a parkade at the casino next door apparently. Sure would be nice to not have to go outside in -30 to get in from the vehicle

Well, they would need time to build the new arena though right?
