I'm not defending the UCP or Smith but this thread has become laughable like when the Flames lose a few games in a row and people start calling for firings and trades. If the UCP wins then it's probably not great for the province but it's not like the NDP won't screw up themselves. Just as we are doing federally we will just have to ride it out until we get some better leaders and parties. This is just a really bad time in political history with bad leaders and parties everywhere you turn. You will go nuts if you get overly invested in any of this.
|
Why are you taking my comment so personally? If she wins I will look into moving out of province. Will that work out? I don't know, but I will for sure look into it. At no point did I say we are 100% out of here just that I will look at moving out of here. I guess I should have checked with you before I tried to think for myself, and what I should believe in?

Exactly, she is mouthing off in the hopes of somehow turning shock into votes and I wish her luck. As all of this moves forward she will get fact checked all over the place as she has more enemies than allies and once fact checked she will walk it all back.

I'm not taking it personally but it's just a whiny thing to say if you aren't serious about doing it. Like all those american celebrities that pouted and said they would move to Canada if Trump got in when none of them did.

Yes you are, and that’s ok even if I or anyone else don’t agree with your views. But let not bull#### each other here ok?

Anyone who expects any government to make zero mistakes is being unrealistic, but there’s a big difference between making a mistake while trying to intentionally implement something sensible and making a mistake by trying to intentionally implement something nonsensical.

And you are just as bad as those same celebs who back a bull#### cause without doing any research. You don't know me or my situation. You are 100% unqualified to tell me if looking to moving out of Alberta is nonsense or whining.
I am being serious, we will look into moving if she wins. I don't agree with anything she stands for.
Tell me one good thing she will bring to the table?

If a more moderate centrist party in Alberta can't win a seat in the next election, than they never will. I got a call from the local NDP last night basically asking me to confirm that I would be voting for them in the next election. I told them no chance...but I also admitted that I likely will not vote UCP.
I think I better get used to living in a NDP and Liberal landscape for the rest of my life though. Very few people under 45 are voting Conservative anymore, and they seem to be doubling down on upping the age of their supporters.

Danielle Smith has all but declared war on AHS and healthcare workers. We were already experiencing an exodus of doctors and nurses thanks to Kenney, if Smith retains power then it's bad news for everyone. Our healthcare system is on the brink of collapse as it is, do you honestly think a full term of Smith wouldn't cause any serious harm?

Regardless of whom is in power across this Country and in Ottawa, a concerted "attack" on our health care system is basically political suicide. For whatever reason Smith has a real chip on her shoulder to do with healthcare. She has a long history of getting canned...connection to healthcare?

Our family practice doctors office (4 docs in Calgary) has chopped their hours to 8:30-2:00 M-F from 8:30-6:00 M-F and 9-2 Saturdays.
One doc left the province and another is halving their working hours and moving to an early retirement.
The UCPs bull#### war on our healthcare system is already directly affecting me.

No it isn't because it's a only few years that a party is in power. Not enough to have an effect on your daily life.
We're all well off enough to take care of ourselves in this province aren't we? Politicians can't enact policies that greatly affect you if you just make enough money for policies to not affect you.

Your definition of a "moderate centrist party" skews pretty far right if you don't consider the Alberta NDP exactly that.

The word conservatism is highly toxic and now needs to die, or at least break apart. It's been hijacked by populists and libertarians. Need a new word to describe the right-of-centre. Especially in Alberta.
And before you say "we had it first" then ask yourself if 'they' are going to give it back. The answer is likely no.

You can’t directly know that. You are attributing things that were likely on motion that may have been marginally accelerated by the current regime. The Family Doctor shortage has been slowly getting worse for many years.
Covid creating a period of high stress causing people to reassess how money, time, and stress interact created a mass disruption on how people assess work and spend money across every industry. This was occurring with or without Kenny and Smith. Did they make it worse? Yes, could Kenny’s polices have been the final straw, sure, is Kenny’s war on healthcare directly affecting you? Certainly not as much as you believe.

The pre existence of a problem doesn’t mean actions can’t be taken to meaningfully accelerate making that problem worse.

Who does/did the UCP’s war on healthcare effect and how does how much you believe it affected them compare to how much they believe it affected them?

More importantly, problems in healthcare are getting worse in part because of UCP policy. If those issues aren't directly affecting you yet, they will be in the future. And those issues will be compounded significantly if Smith wins

I agree you. However when someone says Healthcare got worse the last four years. The response is of course it did we went through a world wide pandemic which still is creating significant load on hospitals and changed peoples spending behaviours and attitudes toward work.
So if you had to attribute todays issue to Covid, Demographics and new policy. I know I would skew heavily toward Covid and demos. I know IGGYOI in his post was asking how much and my answer would be a significant majority would be non-political.
I just much prefer to see a reasonable post above of the belief that heath care will get worse or not be fixed then posts of look at my annecdote Kenny and Smith are bad. I don’t see what the latter adds.

Not that I'm looking to move right now but my wife and I have had conversations with where this province is going. We're not thinking ideologically, but practically. I'm a teacher and I have had a kidney transplant and rely heavily on the health system on a very regular basis. I'm less concerned about my job as a teacher and more concerned about my ability to access the health system as I have been for the last 15 years. Smith has said some very interesting/frightening things about both health and education. Regardless, I'm worried.
However, the bigger issue is my wife's career. She works for the RCMP in the forensics lab, in a highly specialized role. There are only 3 RCMP forensics labs in the country. One in Alberta, one in Vancouver and one in Ottawa. Both the Edmonton and Calgary Police use the Alberta RCMP lab for their work as well. Our concern is the UCP's stance on creating a provincial police force, and the negative impact that would have on my wife's job. There aren't a ton of other forensics options in this country. So we've been discussing what we'd do if the province decided to create its own force (and likely own forensics lab). This could be devastating for her career, and we'd likely be looking at moving to either Vancouver or Ottawa. I'd really rather not, but you never know. Right now we are discussing whether to wait and see what the province does (and she potentially loses her job) or whether she should start applying on openings in Vancouver/Ottawa soonish.
It's frustrating because it's creating a ton of uncertainty. I think that's the biggest issue I'm having with the UCP (and now Smith) is the uncertainty. What will they do and what impact will it have? Do we wait until it's created a negative experience for us or do we move on before? What if my wife loses her job and there aren't any openings at other labs at that time? It's not necessarily easy to get her job, and it took her a long time to get where she is.
I guess, the point is that people have lots of reasons why a government or government policy might make them want to move. And the UCP/Smith can 100% make decisions that impact a person's day-to-day life. It's easy to discount someone else because you can't see how these things would impact your own life.

Very good point, you've got two people generating incomes in your household that both work for the Government, so obviously Government changes are going to effect you disproportionally, especially once you add in a heavy use of the Medical system.
