That's why it's $36 .50. 73 times more than it's worth. Kind of like Nurse's contract.

This is what's used in popcorn to give that yellow colour and "butter" flavour. Actual butter doesn't dye popcorn yellow either which is funny.
Anyways those bags of popcorn would need about 1/8 cup each, at most. So a gallon would make about 128 bags of popcorn and on this random site costs 30$ in bulk you're paying less than half that.
I think 50c is a good estimate of cost when including packaging and the cost to pay the kid serving them. Rent though, is probably fairly high in the cost!

To each his own. I'd rather not eat out of my pockets.
Mind you, I'm sure there are people in Edmonton who would. That could really throw a wrench into Mr. Katz's revenue plans.

What they pour on the popcorn once the bag is full, is 100% butter, at the saddledome. 100% guaranteed. I've seen them putting in whole pounds of Foothills Creamery Salted Butter into their heated pots.

Isn't this just a rip-off of a "pizza pig out" charity event that Eric Francis has been hosting in Calgary for over a decade?

Are you under the impression that Rogers place buys their Pepsi in 2L bottles and at retail prices?

People that haven't done this job (purchasing) don't understand this... I priced out those little doughnuts awhile ago and including the bag (excluding labour) - the price came in at just under 25 cents per bag (I'd suspect popcorn to be similar - so 50 cents seems reasonable to me - maybe a bit more depending on how much butter and if it's real or not). In the restaurant business, the rule of thumb was 30% or less for the price of the food.... so when a steak sandwich costs under $5 in food costs (including the steak, fries, bread, etc.)... the restaurant should price the meal at around $19 for example ... and restaurant steaks are priced way cheaper than the prices we pay in the grocery store.

There’s a definite gouge going on though “excluding labor costs” does a bit of work here.

There isn't a commentator out there with this courage. It would be seen as insubordinate and churlish. We have to realize these people are not analysts but rather paid avatars for the network/NHL. People no longer have leeway to voice personal opinions.
They will only spout what the NHL wants you to hear and push the uneducated viewer to align with their viewpoint. They are given talking points to guide them. They do not deviate. It's what they are paid to do. They manage information.
What the NHL desperately wants is for McJesus to be successful so they can sell merch and sell the league around the world. They misstepped when they thought Edmonton could be the NHL's Green Bay Packers(small market, ugly people ) and McSaviour could be a Payton Manning type.
What a mistake. Guy has the personality of a 2x4. I actually feel sorry for him in how wrong his personality is for the position he holds. He is not a "personality" type leader. He lets his play speak for itself, but the NHL and Coilers wants him to be something he's not. The NHL really is doubling down on this bet and "guiding" his success how ever they can.
They are changing the game via refereeing in order to try and accomplish this to the detriment of the game. Have you seen some of the penalty calls and this new game management thing?? Game management used to be about player safety and to prevent games getting out of control. Not to help better the odds for certain playing styles. It's like watching an NBA game. Frustrating.
I don't know how anyone can bet on an NHL game involving McBaby. It's collusion. Interference and hooking are the catch all for when they want to manage the game and award a penalty. I'm surprised refs can put their helmets on their massive heads before the game with how much smarter and more perceptive they are then the rest of us.
There is no overcoming that black hole called Edmonton. Anything that starts out as shining beacon of hope slowly gets broken up in it's accretion disk only to be inevitably sucked into the no goodness. Nothing that goes into that organization comes out unscathed.
Bettman's legacy will be his efforts to push Edmonton into the limelight. It will be on the same level as Facebook's Meta universe gamble, and the Homer mobile.

How much is the labour cost? If you have two people making $15/hour selling 60 bags of popcorn an hour, the labour costs would be 50 cents per bag.
I have no idea what the throughput on a popcorn stand is, but I assume it's a lot more than one bag of popcorn per minute between two employees.

In the restaurant business - the other 70% (or more) has to cover all the other costs... so if your food cost aren't under 30% (around 20% is better)... you won't make it, so less gouging there.
With the Oilers (and Flames)... you must remember that the players get their cut (50% of hockey related revenue) so immediately that revenue gets cut in half... so $36.50 becomes $18.25.... and then the venue is only opened for limited hours, so you have to make money when you can, this increases the amount... but yes, they are gouging because they can and really must in today's sports economics. Tim Horton's was the best value at the Saddledome until they were basically kicked out because they refused to charge "sport" prices.
