Yeah, if you had his brother on the roster you could use that LTIR space to pay his brother not to play. Only then you wouldn't be accumulating cap for the deadline.
Adding dead cap to your payroll is never a good deal. Sometimes it's the price you pay to make a trade happen.

would love to see stone get his 200 ft game to a level that Sutter likes because we could use the goal scoring that he has the ability to contribute . every good team needs that guy with a cannon who will fire it every chance he gets
it says a lot about Darryl when stones 3/4 goals didn't factor into his evaluation of the player . he wants a solid game in all zones first and foremost

Thank you. You made my argument.

Your answer is wrong.
The salary does go up to the new league minimum.
This has already happened to players that signed deals with massive signing bonuses at league minimum salary.
Believe it or not, Matthews and Marner’s deals both got increased due to the minimum salary being increased. Even their AAVs increased marginally.

For a 7th D and guy making league min - he plays a huge role on this team.
On one hand I love that his price/personal life means we get him within our budget, but lowkey kinda hate he's underselling himself and we're effectively taking advantage of his desire to be here. I know its a win/win in his mind but guy deserves to be paid

The right thing for the Flames to do is give him an extension during the season if he contributes to play at this level. Something like 2 years at 2.5 m say. Given the relationship that seems to exist between Stone and the Flames I kind of expect that to happen. But he has to prove himself over a larger sample size first.

It's widely reported his family is close with Treliving. Even if we don't give him a big rewarding contract, there's no reason why the Flames can end up employing him in another capacity just like Edmonton did with hiring Duncan Keith as Player Development Consultant.

Yea with Stone's love of the city and the team I don't think there's any danger of him not having a well paying job when he hangs up the skates. Guy is the epitome of team player and puts his family and personal happiness above chasing the highest dollar, he's exactly the type of person you want to be involved in the franchise in any capacity

Just extend him for one more year based on last night's game alone.

They’re not giving a 32/33 year old (oops not as old as I thought he was) D a 2/5 contract let’s be real here. If he likes the current situation than I’m by all means not objecting to continuing it. But he’s not a full time player anymore in the league imo and he’ll probably rotate in an out at some point. I think he’s a perfect 7th guy able to step into the bottom pair and provide solid defence there. I doubt he has the stamina to be a 18-20 minute a night 82 game player.

He’s 32 not 42, why wouldn’t he have the stamina? Does soon to be 33 year old Tanev not have the stamina to play 82. He’s going to run around 12-13mins as a 6th not 18-20. Seems like you’re biasing based on there not being room for him last year.
If Kylington isn’t back and Stone’s play doesn’t drop off significantly from his playoff games and the first two this year he’s not coming out of the lineup.

Sutter actually ins't a huge fan of Stone's defensive game. He's in the line-up because Kylington isn't here, or else he'd probably be in the press box like a large chunk of last season.
But his offensive threat is just awesome as a fan. Love the guy.
edit: it's fine that Stone is a little deficient defensively (especially breaking out), because if he was a strong defender and great at break outs and as threatening as he is offensively he'd be a top pairing, $7-$9mil defenseman and likely not playing for Calgary in the path of time. I love him for what he is.

I wonder how he'd look at RW Or even on the off wing on a powerplay?
Those clappers from the slot could be deadly.

Why are some people so determined to turn defensemen into forwards? It's weird.
