Are the Oilers in a similar position to the Flames were years ago, where if they sustain an injury they can't afford to call anyone up (assuming the injured player doesn't go on LTIR)?
Which tells me they’re not yet sold on Skinner and Campbell yet. Mike Smith hasn’t been offered his retirement promotion yet in case they need him to make a miraculous comeback later this season.
The old player retires but hire him at another position so we save cap and the player's salary remains whole play.
There are provisions in the CBA that spell out that teams are only allowed to pay retired players market rates for any position they are hired in post retirement.
So no way is Keith getting $1.5 million to be a consultant of player development.

Yes, because Katz is famous for never paying any money under the table, for anything.

I'm sure a guy like Katz can figure out a way to pay Keith under the table. The Patriots did it with Brady for years and the NFL actually pays attention to stuff like this whereas the NHL has rules but they choose to turn a blind eye most of the time, hence the Oilers being able to predetermine Mike Smith failing his physical months in advance despite no reported injuries or offseason surgeries.

Yeah ok……. Katz leaves the rest is cash on the Katzing couch.

Wow, Keith is really going to earn that salary.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Everyone knew they were going to do this. Even before he retired, people were saying the Oilers would probably try to entice him into retirement by padding his pockets later down the line. You don't leave that much money on the table for nothing in return.
Mike Illitch was the master of doing this. Players would sign in Detroit at a discount, but then later down the line, they would become scouts, advisors, ambassadors, personal service contractors, etc..., and you just knew there was a handshake deal in place at the time they were signed. I am pretty sure he was the reason why the NHL started to clamp down on it.
I am sure Katz is smart enough to cover the money trail and nothing will come from it, but it is obvious what is going on here.

Sure, Jan. They probably have been overpaying ex Oilers for years so his 1.5 will be no different. How much do you think Gretzky makes for coming and drinking wine in the booth?
