Probably. I don't know why I'm so interested in jersey numbers. Lol.

Yeah, but in this case, he’s a guy who was picked up on waivers. He ain’t calling any shots. They could say “here’s 84” and he’d say thanks, sir”.

Good for Juuso.

As a Flames fan, going back to draft night, I'm still disapointed we didn't take Liljegren, who's looking really good lately on the Leafs, and was the higher-upside prospect. Sometimes it's easy to say hindsight is 20/20 but in this case, on draft day, nearly everyone wanted Liljegren except the Flames.

No this isn't true.
Bob Mckenzie's rankings, which is the aggregate of various scouts and the one that everyone points as the most credible list, had Juuso 14 and Liljegren 16.

https://www.tsn.ca/mckenzie-s-draft-...e-100-1.778987

Button did have Liljegren 10 and Juuso 17
https://www.tsn.ca/craig-s-list-final-ranking-1.294692

You can find others, but my point is that it's not true that "nearly everyone" wanted Liljegren. They were placed in around the same spot with Juuso higher on some lists and Liljegren higher on others.

The Flames didn't go "off the board" with the pick.

2017 was just a poor quality draft in general, and you had to get pretty lucky.

Liljegren and Valimaki were a coin flip. They were both mid-first rounders. Some people had one higher, some had the other higher. Suggesting otherwise is just massaging the facts.

Also, Valimaki was tracking far better for the first couple years, post-draft, until the injuries, so it looks like the Flames made the right call.

With the off-season Brad's had? Swing away...

Liljegren was a higher upside pick, as a guy who was originally rated top 5 who fell. The Flames have already benefited from that sort of pick with Kylington.

Juuso will wear No. 4 in Arizona.

Good for him. Wonder how many teams had claims on him? Did flames think he was going to pass through waivers?

Weird they wouldn't trade him for a pick

I would suggest every team in the league knew Calgary was too deep on the blueline and had to release at least one defenseman so why spend an asset on a player you know you can pick up for nothing.

Always sad to see yet another first go bust for this franchise, trades and making hay in later rounds is keeping this thing going. Really hope Zary and Pelletier turn out..

Except that with waivers, you don't know if you get to claim him. So if there truly was interest, maybe someone would give you a late pick to secure him.

But I doubt there was much interest and I expect he sees waivers again. Although I know nothing of the Arizona depth on D so maybe they keep him around because of a lack of options in the organization.

Putting the most recent first rounders aside due to time ... the Flames really haven't had a full on 1st round bust since Erixon or Nemisz

Tkachuk, Bennett, Monahan all players. Jankowski didn't wow, but he's played 272 games. Baertschi 292 games and derailed by concussions.

Valimaki has 82 games and may get more, but bust if he doesn't I guess. Erixon 93 games, Nemisz 15

Backlund the year before that.

It's not like Vali just narrowly missed making the Flames because they are deep...he was terrible and wasn't even close

Not even sure he stays in Arizona although they don't care if they win
