Good luck Juuso. I hope he can get his career back on track in the desert. Just no room on this roster for him.

So looks like Ruzicka is the only new player originally drafted by the Flames to crack yhe roster this year. Thought there might be one or two more this year.
Pelletier was the other one I thought would fill a spot before TC started.

I'm sure that Sutter is all broken up about valimaki being claimed.

True. When his parents come to visit, they will take up both seats.

At least the pressure is off playing in front of crowds smaller than Stockton.

Good luck to Valimaki, sucks about the injuries.
But I'm glad he was claimed. That extra little bit of cap-space could be huge this year at the deadline. So many other expected playoff teams that are utilizing LTIR or are right snug with the cap that at the deadline they will be forced to do salary-in/salary-out deals. Might give the Flames an opportunity to land a rental or two for cheap simply because they can afford the extra cap-hit many other teams can't.

Good news for Valimaki, good news for the Flames. Hope he does well but it wasn’t going to happen here.
Honestly, if Arizona puts him back on waivers, I don’t try to claim him back if I’m Treliving. Just not worth the cap hit.

Now that we let Arizona have Valimaki for free they can do us a solid and retain 25% of Patrick Kane for us. (After Chicago retains 50%).

Is there a reason PIT didn’t claim Zohorna? I don’t mind the free asset but I would have thought they would be interested in getting him back.

Basically if they claim him back and one other team also puts in a claim, PIT gets him back but cannot send him to the minors. Not being able to send him down could have run the risk of them not being compliant to start the season.
If they knew no one else was going to put in a claim they 100% would have claimed him back cause he could have been sent to farm.
Tre pulled a fast one to further improve our F depth down on the farm essentially.

So can we treat it like we traded Valimaki for Zohorna? It makes me feel better.

There were only 5 teams behind the Flames in waiver priority when they claimed him less than a week ago. If I was Hextall, that's a risk I would have taken.

Zohorny could have some usefulness here but might not be until spots open up in the bottom 6 next season

It's $425K to be precise.
A player being waived only saves min contract + $375k = $1,125,000 (this year)
So Valimaki would have cost us $425,000 ($1,550,000 - $1,125,000)
His being claimed eliminates that $425k off the cap

Wouldn't the other team also have to be below PIT for the Pens to get 'stuck' with him? Are you certain it's not possible for the original team to make a claim conditional on being the only claimaint?

The Coyotes probably based this decision on getting a bogo deal from their jersey supplier who agreed that Valimaki and Vejmelka were close enough they could let it slide.

On that same topic, I wonder what number Juuso will wear in AZ ... 6 is taken (for now) by Chychrun, 8 is taken by Schmaltz.
