Hockey seems to be a strangely ambi-dexterous sport in which your dominant handedness doesn’t necessarily factor in your hockey handedness. In general I think if you are using your dominant hand as your bottom hand, you are a more powerful shooter, and using your dominant hand on the top makes you a better puck handler. Generalities.

I’m right handed hockey, golf, baseball, writing, lacrosse, etc.

But because of this I wanted to be “left handed” at goalie, guitar and pool (which holds the thing the same way as a right handed hockey stick). My dad pointed out as a kid that it was wierd catching with my left hand in baseball but right hand in goalie, so I swapped (although I could play either way probably). My guitar teacher swapped me since I was just learning and I’m glad he did. I didn’t know I was “left handed” at pool until my dad pointed it out in my twenties.

Weegar and Huberdeau were both coming off career years and joining new teams so if they were wanting to maximize their earning signing extensions this summer was the safest bet. Sure they could have bet on themselves but it is risky moving to a new team and conference. They both get paid based on the performance to date. At 29-30 years old maximum term makes the most sense from the players standpoint so I don’t think the flames had much of a choice. As much as it made sense for the players to lock in the team was also incredibly motivated to make this deal a long term one for the team. Trading a franchise player in Tkachuk landed this team 2 core players and Huberdeau is set to be the new face of the franchise.

The summer started and the team wanted to go 8 years with a 29 year old and 24 year old. They ended up going 7 years with a 32 year old and 8 years with a 30 year old and 29 year old (when their extensions kick in a year from now). The haters out there say the Flames are quickly aging and I don’t think they are wrong. Next summer Lindholm and Hanifin will be looking for huge deals to pay them for their early-mid thirties. I do wonder how this team will avoid aging like the Sharks, or Kings from 2015-2021. Need to have Pelletier, Zary, Coronato, 23 1st to all hit

I think Weegar's path and foundation are similar to Giordano's. He's a hard worker, humble, and very talented as a late bloomer.

yup - same hit turn, and same hand on top

Honestly though....are we not all much happier now without them?

Sure, the sky was falling for a minute there because we thought we were going to be left in the lurch, but subbing out $27.375M (assuming $10.5M each) of Johnny, Monahan and Tkachuk and swapping in $23.5M for Huberdeau, Weegar and Kadri?

And only Kadri's contract even starts right away?

I am. Don't have to see Tkachuk's BS reverse hits anymore and argue with people the difference between shoulder, upper arm and elbow right to the mush.

Had a “discussion” on twitter with someone who didn’t understand that Tkachuk just isn’t worth the hassle.

Was that fun for you?

My last "discussion" on Twitter was debating the fact that KXL wasn't for US consumption.

It was not fun for me.

I wouldn't want Gaudreau at 8 x 10.5 and I never really like Tkachuk. I'm happy.

I liked Gaudreau, Monahan and Tkachuk here, but their time was up and i'm excited to see where Huberdeau, Kadri and Weegar can take this team.

Ditto.

I liked them all, but I'm excited for the change.

You want to know the biggest reason why?

Gaudreau wanted to go where hockey doesnt matter.

Tkachuk wanted to go where he thought he'd have the most fun.

Huberdeau, Weegar and Kadri? They have chips on their shoulders. They're happy to be here, but they've got points to prove.

They are pissed and they dont like to lose.

Finally.

Everyone wants to win but not everyone wants to do what it takes to win for as long as it takes and not everyone hates to lose. Those are the guys you want. Some guys hate to lose more than they enjoy winning.

Yes, this!

I liked them but as times passed on, realize that they all loved to win but didn't hate to lose enough. To me, after a loss, their body language was we lost oh well, on to the next game.

I gave up. Dude insisted he had watched Tkachuk since age 16. Didn’t believe that some teammates might not appreciate being dragged into scrums because Matt was miffed or decided to jab a goalie.

My sense is Tkachuk is very misread by a lot of outsiders.

I think so too. It would explain why he's been called a power forward since being traded.

Going to be interesting to see how many articles come out next year along the lines of “maybe Matt Tkachuk isn’t a power forward after all”.

I agree with all of this with the exception of Kadri. What’s the chip on his shoulder? He just proved his point last season.
