It also doesn't seem to be entirely true. Notably, the losses of the paratroopers at Hostomel and the 4th Guard Tanks Division in Kharkiv don't fit.

Lets not go too far, Russians are terrible at logistics. It was widely called before the war started. They are also awful at complex strategy due to their tight command and control style. Kill the leader the troops don’t know what to do.

Ukraine everyone is a leader and they move more professionally. Russia basically expected the Ukrainians to roll over and they didn’t.

Its less diabolical. Putin is losing, and he has a group he can shred more than others. Still evil absolutely, but he isn’t the genius some thought he was. Just another arrogant ahole.

Didn’t you make fun of the Trump is a savant argument.

Putin is expending the least political capital he can to try to save face. He is betting on a cold winter to bring the EU into line. That’s about it.

If he murdered is own population the sanctions would be far less. People will freeze to stop Russia from invading Europe. People won’t pay marginally more for disposable garbage to save Ughars.

No, like dictators Putin has to be seen to win to maintain his power, nor does he particularly want his ethnic minorities dead, he wants them compliant which getting his arse kicked by Ukraine doesnt achieve, no this is just a monumental cluster **** on Putins part, he just didnt realise how badly degraded and badly led his army is

Yes, because Trump is an idiot. Putin is and always has been a conniving little #### who is unafraid to do the unimaginable. Comparing Trump and Putin is dumb. When Trump's political enemies start falling out of windows or die from contact poisoning or radiological attacks, then we can maybe suggest they are on the same level. Trump can't even stack a court to his advantage.

The fact that there was so many indicators that Trump may have actually been under Putin's thumb tells you everything you need to know about how the two fall on the relative intelligence & power spectrum.

This basically confirms they plan to mobilize around 1M.

Equipping that number of men and not treating them like cannon fodder is another matter entirely.

Putin is really good at power games. Like, super good. Considering the circumstances his grip on power is remarkable. But that's basically all he's good at.

You didn’t address the remainder of the list of the far more likely reason the mobilization is occurring the way it is.

Haven't we been told that the USSR and Russia have been making enough munitions to wage a war that lasts 1,000 years?

I would imagine each man would at least get an AK-47 and basically unlimited ammo. 50,000 men with Kalashnikovs can be very dangerous if their commanders don't care about casualty rates - which they don't. Modern day Zhukov doctrine: throw as many warm bodies at an enemy as possible, with our without guns.

Body armor, NVGs, helmets, comms, etc, probably not exactly available. And the conscripts might have to walk from Moscow to the front lines due to lack of vehicles.

It sounds like there are exceptions now for people with specific occupations.

The Ukrainians will enjoy the target practice.

I reckon this is a pretty good summation of what they will be getting

You mean the types of people working in St Petersburg or Moscow but not in places people aren't looking at? Shocking I say

My wife's friend at work is from St. Petersburg and said she personally knows 5 people in that city who got selected, including 2 of her family members.

#### is getting real for them.

I can't imagine logistics are easy for this kind of mobilization. Presumably the plan is to throw as much meat as possible as quickly as possible, so they don't have to worry about pesky things like barracks and food.

How long until their position on the war changes? Basic psychology suggests they won't change their opinion on Ukraine and Ukrainians, but there could be some reassessment of the necessity of the war

Russia is certainly moving towards a war of attrition, which I suppose was plan B after the initial invasion failed.

Sit a few hundred thousand conscripts on the front line, make Ukraine pay for each inch until the world "forgets" about them.

Will it work? who knows.
