Even the most awkward person can muster the words, I enjoyed my time in Calgary it was time to move on for me and my family. How do you come up with it was best for us to not go back to Calgary. He never even tried to rectify that statement all he had was something for the fans which was a letter written by his agent. He knew he was leaving in May he had a lot of time to prepare something better.

And if not, his agent has PR people on staff to prepare a statement for him.
Just really ineptly handled all around.

Could be a great opportunity for “Please join us in welcoming back one of the greatest and most favoured Calgary Flames of all time!…”

He would have to be the dumbest person on earth to not expect questions about Calgary
Even on the Sportsnet interview days later he seemed dumbfounded. I get being a bad speaker but come on guy.

Meh. He misses Calgary. It was his home for years. If he has a hard time answering questions it is what it is. Rather hear him have a hard time talking about it than the robot response. His parents seemed like pretty cool people. They didn't give a #### about fame and money.

Lots of players are the same way, including fan favourites like Lindholm. Should we roast him now? Or wait until he’s gone before we complain that he was never part of the community?

Expecting and preparing for questions is entirely different from actually opening your mouth and speaking in front of cameras and reporters.
Of course they would have prepped him, and yes, it was probably handled ineptly. But at the end of the day, he is a weak and nervous speaker and it's pretty easy to screw up, even if you are prepared.
Look at Virtanen a couple days ago. He was clearly prepped, and had all the 'answers' ready. But he was completely unable to actually connect those phrases into any kind of articulate sentences. He just kept blurting phrases over and over.
Replying to reporters, in front of a camera, is not easy. And hockey players aren't exactly well schooled, for the most part.

And this was a guy who is historically much better and more comfortable in the media than Gaudreau. The NHL posted draft interviews in 2013, and Virtanen came across very strong. I remember clearly that he impressed a lot of posters here, myself included.

It’s too bad he screwed himself out of 20 million dollars, a more competitive team, a longer contract, and a jersey retirement as one of the all time greats.
If he had left for any of those reasons it would have “computed” for most fans.
As it is, he chose to be “less than” when his offers for Philly and NJ fell through.
I’m too old to boo… but I will eye roll and head shake if there is a tribute video.

He did this in that video interview from his car. I remember the quote about "bad times, there weren't any" or something to that effect.
Yeah he's a poor speaker and his departure could have been handled better but he said just about exactly what you suggested.
Can we get over this now?

I'm willing to bet Guy will never watch Johnny games as intensely as before.
The Flames should fly them and the uncle in for the Cup finals...

If the Flames are very competitive (division lead, top 6 in the league, etc.), I think most will be forgiven - Johnny would have had his hand in that. Plus there is no better way to show that he made a mistake by succeeding in his absence and showing not only our appreciation for what he gave the fans of Calgary but we are thankful in the direction the team went (by not booing an appreciation video).

I'm gonna cheer him. He gave us lots of fun years. Not a huge fan of his last minute shenanigans this summer, but whatever - not every player has to stay in Calgary for their whole career; there are lots of other amazing cities in the NHL to live in and play in.

Gross doesn’t. He has 5 agents counting himself (two of which are only for European teams) and a booking agent on staff.

There's also Columbus, Ohio!

This^
Why do people whine and complain? Johnny doesn’t owe anyone anything. He fulfilled his contractual agreement, played immensely well. The flames fulfilled their contract agreement to him as well. He never embarrassed the franchise either. Didn’t ask for a trade or put the team in a hard spot his whole time here.
He made his family decision, and good for him for putting his family (wife and child) above a fan bases desires. Very commendable of him. Why? Because he fulfilled his end of the contract - so there is zero reason to despise him, or feel belittled by him.
And BT still got the team loaded for this season. Change is always hard, but it’s good as well.
Thank you Johnny for the years you were here: for playing and caring, desiring to be the best and doing what you could everyday to be a great part of the team. All the best to you in Columbus.

I never complained, I said its not a knock on him. It's probably a reason why he was never considered for the A or part of the leadership group.

The Gaudreau's are really good people. It seems like Columbus is ideal for the wife's family but I hope the Gaudreau's get to see a lot more of Johnny as well.
