Whatever man…..in that case, anybody can be anything

That’s just my opinion for whatever it’s worth. Milano is a useless one dimensional bust. While you are at it, sign Jonathan Dahlen too. Sutter can turn anybody around. Maybe I should get a PTO too.

Why are you so mad?

There is a good chance that both Valimaki and Mackey would pass through waivers, but all it takes is one team to like a player. Also, it just takes one team to have a couple of injuries through preseason.

Byron almost made it through waivers, until some idiot got into a car accident in Montreal. IIRC, Montreal was the only claim on Byron. You just never really know sometimes.

At the end of the day, does it really matter? Calgary's defence is young (outside of Tanev). A Valimaki trade would most likely bring back another 'change of scenery' type that usually results in more disappointment.

I am ok with Valimaki staying with the team. I am ok with the Flames trading him. I am ok with him being picked up on waivers. My preference, however, is that the Flames retain, and hopefully he gets back on track. He looked like he was going to be a foundation piece at one point. I can, however, definitely see a team with an injury or two pick him up on waivers.

Finally found this graph... not sure it's been posted here, I know it's been on Calgary Puck through a linked (Twitter) post.

This is why we need to sign Weegar.

The benefit is most pronounced not just by Weegar's addition, but that coupled with Gudbranson's removal.

Also, ha!ha! @ Darnell "Open Door" Nurse.

It seems like Slavin is still very underrated as a world-class defenseman.
I can't even imagine how effective he'd be under Sutter.

Well, clearly this means Brett Kulak > Cale Makar.

Is that a projected line? I thought Reinhart was also somewhat less than fleet of foot.

Right, because the only job of an NHL defenceman is to prevent zone entries.

Only on breaking up the entry into the zone.... If a team loses the puck and can't carry it in cleaning, that hugely diminishes their scoring potential. With Gudbranson for example... he let them in cleanly and then punished them in the corner, imagine breaking up the play before or at the line, it's save wear and tear on your defense (not to mention goalie) and at the end of the game, they are still fresh.

Look at how many defense men Colorado had in the top quadrant and in the top portion of that quadrant.... and where is the Cup again?

Just watching that Colorado - Edmonton series, you realize how important carrying the puck into the zone is for Edmonton, some teams can dump and chase, but for Edmonton and McDavid in particular, it's extremely important to carry it in. Now watch how Colorado broke up the play at the line and either prevented the puck entry into the zone or had the puck go off Edmonton's stick and into the zone uncontrolled - it's why Edmonton lost.

Now imagine Calgary with Weegar doing the same thing.... that will disrupt things for Edmonton... this will help us in the BOA... and if Markstrom can rid himself of cheating to the lower part of the net - something he only did against Edmonton to that great of an extent (still think we needed to start Vladar in some games) ... we will win the next BOA series if we meet them again.

That aspect just isn't Gud's game. He's not stepping up to deny the zone. He is more - allow entry, then funnel to the boards and check, or protect the crease. More like Regehr I guess.

There's 2 ways to read this...
Either Hanifin is the closest to perfection, or he's no good at anything.

Or the third, correct way:

He’s incredibly average at preventing entries

Which completely matches the eye test. But its okay, he's a young good second pairing defenceman on a good contract with room to grow. If we consider Tanev-Weegar our top pairing, he still fits in well.

I have a feeling Sutter just rolls 3 lines with fairly equal time. No real 1, 2 or 3 pairing.

Hanifin-Andersson
Kylington-Tanev
Zadorov-Weegar

Analytics still struggles in a lot of cases when it comes to defenceman evaluation.

There were quite a few statheads concerned when the Oilers traded away Martin Marincin because he was strong at defending zone entries.

Look, as much as you are hoping otherwise, there is just no way in hell that Darnell Nurse is ever getting anywhere close to living up to that contract.

I still can't believe he is getting paid more than Cale Makar!
