Since 2019, in 27 playoff games, Hanifin has been on the ice for 25 5-on-5 goals against, the most on the team, and just 10 goals for. His GA/60 was 2nd highest on the team in 12 playoff games this year.

He's a decent #3, but I have not seen anything special.

This checks out with eye test.

This is why I'm fine with him, but not particularly high on the player.

But he can put up numbers, play against the other team's best players, and be a huge part of a division winning team's defense.
As I said, he's Beta. Second best on the team at everything.

Never liked Kessel, even when he was a pretty good player.

But if Sutter wants him, that changes every thing.

I hope the Flames at least kick tires on Kessel. If winning is at the top of his priority list, hopefully he would sign a cheap one-year deal. I think it's a good option since the Flames don't have cap space, and they don't need to give up assets. I'm nervous about trading a guy like Hanifin because that makes the 6th spot weak, and you're one injury from basically only having a reliable top 4.

I really do not get the Kessel fixation developing here.

Toffoli is essentially the same guy. Kessel may be (or have been) more talented offensively but Toffoli is 4 years younger, putting up more goals recently, and better defensively (Toffoli was on pace for a 44 goal season in the COVID shortened 2020 season). Neither are particularly great skaters, but I'd give Toffoli the edge in the fact that he keeps moving his feet.

Most importantly, the Flames already spent assets to get Toffoli onto the roster. Spending more assets to clear the cap space needed for Kessel does not make sense.

I'd rather see the Flames make a move to trade a D for a long term RW solution, or ride with the roster we have and give players a chance in bigger roles. Especially having a spot available for a rookie to make the team. If the players do not establish themselves in their bigger roles then we should go for a mid-season trade.

Move assets in the New Year if an upgrade is needed. Sign Kessel for 1 year and nothing but cap space right now. I definitely want to see what that d core can do.

Been pining for LandPhil since the trade deadline. Think he could be like what Versteeg was a few years ago.

Adding Kessel would significantly upgrade our second powerplay. It feels like last year once the first PP came off there was no chance to score.

If the Flames signed Kessel and somehow met the leafs in the SCF next year with Kessel/Kadri on the flames and Gio/Brodie on the Leafs it would be quite the story

Both Kadri and Kessel might have extra incentive to burn the Leafs too….

Eight goals last year for Phil. That is terribad. Was there any explanation for why his scoring touch vanished?

I think the Flames PP is going to be just fine this year with Huberdeau, Kadri, and Weegar in the fold. I'd be more concerned about 5-on-5 goal scoring, and I'm not persuaded Kessel is the solution to that. I'd sooner see a D-man moved out for someone closer to their prime and with some scoring touch, or adding someone at the deadline with the cap space they've saved up.

44 assists ... including a career-high 32 even-strength assists.

Oilers also have one really good line and three terrible ones...I'm guessing Hanifin got more of line 1

Yeah, I haven't seen Kessel play in a while, but if he's still skating good I don't see how he wouldn't help this team. 52 points is no joke. Especially on that ####ty yotes team last year.

Career low shooting percentage too. Might have just been snake bit.

Adding a 50-60 point right shooting winger for around $2 million on a 1 year deal would be a pretty smart move actually.

In a vacuum there are more appealing & younger players out there. But if Kessel's looking to sign a contract for only 2 mil, no matter what you think of the guy, he helps your team and likely outperforms that cap hit easily.

We avoided the injury bug last year but I would take every bit of depth I can find up front.

Low cost for another cup winner with experience.

I dunno... 8 goals and 25 primary assists, no injury to explain the lack of scoring, 35 years old this season...

I feel like we can do better, even if it means waiting a few months into the season.
