Anyone who talks !@#$ about Hanifin is talking out of their ass. You’re either just making crap up for giggles, hate the player for no reason, or are perpetually stuck in a “the grass is always greener” state of fandom.
Hanifin is an absolute beast and is on a brilliant contract for two more seasons.
Connor !@#$in Garland. Get outta here.

That’s fair, but that’s the type of return we would be getting for Hanifin.
For the record I wouldn’t do that trade either. I would leave the top 6 alone and just sign Rodrigues or use Valimaki to get a forward in a similar situation as he is, and hope we get lucky and find a forward you can slot into the top 9.
Well, I think it's more that you don't have a sense of a Hanifin return. That's not what you're getting back for Hanifin, lol. Trading him is not because he doesn't fit or sucks, or to trade a D for forward for the hell of it. It would be because he could legitimately land you a top line winger that could make us a true cup contender.
Combined with him being a super expensive re-signing in two years, plus a slight threat to go to UFA. People need to understand that Hanifin trade ideas are not because people don't see the value in him, it's because we see the value in him, and I suspect Brad is thinking along the same lines.
I think this is getting away from us here. This isn’t whether Hanifin is a good defenseman or not, he clearly is and I have even stated that I wouldn’t trade him, I would move Kylington way before I would move Hanifin.
I just don’t think his value is going to bring back someone like Barzal.
I also think Garland is way better than people are giving him credit for.

He did have a good year until he embarrassed himself against the Oilers
Don’t get me wrong I am a Hanifin fan, but saying he is a top pair defenseman is a bit misleading, he is a guy who can play on the top pair, but is probably more of a 3 or 4. Nothing wrong with that.
I think you are undervaluing Garland is a very good two way forward, who put up 52 points last year, mostly at 5v5.
I have seen Hanifin mentioned on here in trades for Barzal which laughable. We would have to add significantly to make that deal work.
We just aren’t getting a first line forward for Hanifin, that’s not happening.
Well not to walk back what I said, but a Hanifin top line forward trade likely involves an add on Calgary's end. Like a Dube.
Salary wise it would probably make things work better, too. Hanifin and Dube are $7.1AAV together, and a first line scoring winger is likley in that range.

Im curious as to what metrics (if any) you are using to come to that conclusion?
Yep, and if GMs around this league made personnel decisions based on a five-game sample in the playoffs, the Flames would have had a tough time giving Tkachuk away. Gaudreau would probably be playing somewhere for league minimum.
So possibly Flamesfan05's assessment of Hanifin is a wee bit off target.

I like Hanifin, but he is probably the 3rd or 4th best defenseman on this team. IMO Weegar, Andersson are for sure ahead of him and you can have a solid debate wether Tanev is or not.
Again I am not saying he is a bad defenseman, I think he usually pretty underrated by this fan base. I am just not sure we are going to get a high end return for him.

He's really quiet and solid. I don't get his underrating as well.

They say the Greek philosopher Eratosthenes was nicknamed ‘Beta’, because it seemed like he was the second best in the world — at everything.
Hanifin is the Flames' Beta. Tanev is better defensively, Andersson is handier on the PP, Kylington faster, Zadorov tougher, Weegar probably flashier… but Hanifin just doesn't have any major weaknesses. I think a lot of people don't appreciate how well-rounded he is, because being well-rounded doesn't show on highlight reels.
And of course, some fans will never forgive him for getting burned by McDavid, even though that happens to every defenceman in the league.
