I kinda wonder if he was playing for a contract. This year was an anomaly for him. I think his production goes down away from the Pens.

Treviling was the one that said he's still looking to make moves and specifically mentioned that we have a lot of D.

Teams around the league are way more open to trades in the summer though, while everyone is still preparing rosters.
You don't see too many in season trades until the trade deadline starts to approach, as teams are more closed off and in wait and see mode.
You try to trade a top four D-man in the summer and 31 GM's are in tinkering mode and turn their heads and pull out their roster sheets. You do that in November/December and everyone turns their heads to see, but 10-14 teams are now playing well and happy with their current roster and harder to get to the table.

He'll take Bishop's spot, so subtract any AAV over 750k. If Ruz is smart he'll take 750k AAV and a higher (if not full) AHL salary

|
It just say lottery protected on Capfriendly, but I'm sure Central Registry has the conditions in far more detail.
https://www.capfriendly.com/trades/p...atthew-tkachuk
FLA traded their '22 1st for Reinhart - Top 10 protected. If it were top 10, BUF would have gotten the '23 1st and MTL (Chiarot) would have gotten the '24 1st, which would have pushed PHI (Giroux) to receiving the '25 1st.
But that is mostly wrapped up before the Huberdeau trade since BUF and MTL got the '22 and '23s. The '24 to PHI is still top 10 protected, impacting the '25 that went to MTL via CGY.
I guess this might be the reason for the weird option to change from FLA '25 to CGY '24 1st, if MTL doesn't want to wait until '26. But that only happens if FLA is bad by '24, so it would seem smart to wait for the '26.
It's all really very simple.

Not that I would trade Hanifin, but would Hanifin for Garland make sense?
Personally I wouldn’t trade anyone in the top 4 Hanifin, Andersson, Weegar or Tanev. Anyone else I could get behind moving, but really I think the whole 10 defensemen on one way contracts thing gets to much attention. I think the only guy who might get claimed is Valimaki. I would be a bit surprised if the rest were claimed.

No interest in trading a 50pt Dman for a 50pt forward.

Yes, the rolling to 2026 seems like an assumption based on the stated conditions on CapFriendly. If the FLA '25 1st round pick is not a lottery pick, both PHI and CGY (or MTL, subject to whatever comes out of the Monahan conditions) could claim ownership of it.
How far into the future are teams allowed to trade draft picks?
Can FLA conditionally trade the pick again to some other team?

Not an acquisition, but rather a signing, I would be extremely interested in Phil Kessel. Right shot right wing, still decently productive and would slot into the middle six well, would come fairly cheap and on a short term deal. Wouldn't take much shuffling of finances to fit him under the cap too.

That’s fair, but that’s the type of return we would be getting for Hanifin.
For the record I wouldn’t do that trade either. I would leave the top 6 alone and just sign Rodrigues or use Valimaki to get a forward in a similar situation as he is, and hope we get lucky and find a forward you can slot into the top 9.

Hanifin is a top pair defenceman on a great value contract. You’re undervaluing him if you think he’d only return someone like Garland.

Nobody is going to claim Valimaki
Every team has a few guys like him
He is overpaid for what he brings

Don’t get me wrong I am a Hanifin fan, but saying he is a top pair defenseman is a bit misleading, he is a guy who can play on the top pair, but is probably more of a 3 or 4. Nothing wrong with that.
I think you are undervaluing Garland is a very good two way forward, who put up 52 points last year, mostly at 5v5.
I have seen Hanifin mentioned on here in trades for Barzal which laughable. We would have to add significantly to make that deal work.
We just aren’t getting a first line forward for Hanifin, that’s not happening.

A rebuilding team like Buffalo, Arizona or Chicago might take a shot at seeing if he can get back on track. It wasn’t that long ago he was showing legit promise at the NHL level, and was a 1st round pick.

Because Cale Makar lives and breathes and if he ain't Makar, he ain't somebody.

I think Hanifin has taken massive steps in the last 2 seasons that have him in the top pair discussion. Playing with Tanev helped set him up and then he proved it even further playing with Rasmus last year. He finally broke out and had a monster year offensively with double digit goals and just shy of 50pts. I do think he might price himself out of an extension but that is a problem for next summer.
Now that the team has landed Kadri I am more inclined to run it with the same group as last year while subbing out Gudbransen for the vastly better Weegar.
I am very interested to see if the Flames can make a deal around Valimaki for a similar type winger. I know the thought is the Oilers wouldn’t move Puljujarvi but it helps them shed some cap and by all accounts both sides still seek a divorce. I am interested to see if Sutter can unlock something there by giving him a defined role to build his confidence.
I am not overly familiar with similar young players who showed some real promise but completely stalled like Vali?

No he’s not. He was a top pairing defenceman on the 3rd best defensive team in the league. Your assessment of the player is incorrect.

Just seems like fans are drumming up any excuse to not let another American leave their team High and dry.
Hanifin is fine. Him and Andersson made up a legit 1st pairing last season. And we were lucky enough to have a 1b pairing too.
Only reason the Flames move Hanifin is cost and if he's been upfront and saying he's gonna go UFA.
