love Mony and will miss him but trading him and a first for Kadri is probably a trade most people here would make every day.

Should've just made it a conditionless 2nd. It's one year of Mony. Not a lot to stomach.
Stupid Habs.

Yeah, I'm sure Treliving started off with "have a first".

I can't believe there is still Flames fans bitching.
This team had 111 points last year and were dominant in all the fancy stats.
They have a Jack Adams level coach
They have a Vezina caliber goalie
They just upgraded their defense from last season
They just upgraded their center core from last season
How anyone can bitch about this right now just amazes me.

Probably best case scenario that Florida takes the Flames 2024 1st.

Trade should have happened three or four years ago. Instead of getting over-paid for him, they're over-paying to get rid of him.

|
Maybe. Kadri is a type of player that could age alright though. His playmaking has really improved the last two seasons - which is a skill that actually tends to age okay.
Big risk for sure but not my money and if they end up sucking in 2 years then he can just be an expensive piece of the tank then.
The Kadri signing is fine if there is no acquisition cost but paying a first to get rid of Monahan for that honour is the issue.

Don't like, I was not so secretly hoping Monahan could be like found money contributing at a 2nd line pace from the 3rd line later this season. I think you need those types of stories to happen if you want to win.
Would have preferred we found a way to clear Lucic's cap hit, and rolled the dice on Monny, if a 10-20 overall pick is basically the price. But it was clear the flames needed another top 6 forward to be competative.

|
If it is that low, I doubt they'll take that option. They could end up with a higher pick in the next draft by deferring. The only way it gets to 2026, I believe, is if the Flames win the 1st overall pick in 2025.

Yeah, Treliving should have known Monahan's hips were going to give out and traded our #1C in his early 20's while they were trying to win.
lol some of the brutal takes on here are incredible

Tre's GM character has a near 100 rating for trades. I don't think anyone predicted the haul he would receive for Tkachuk. He's used that surplus to help clear the roster to land a competitive player.
Will put my appreciation down for Sean Monahan. The guy came, scored, played hurt for the organization, and arguably even put in harm's way by the organization. Yet through it all, not a peep of complaint.
Good luck Sean.

Steep price to pay to get rid of Monahan. Really hope that pick is 20-30 and not 10-20.

So I guess this must mean that the CGY 2024, 2025, 2026, and the FLA 2025 1sts are all untradeable for now since they are all subject to pending conditions that may be met at some point.

I’m not sure id want to trade a 1st for 7 years of Kadri at $7M to be honest.
The whole point of overpaying a UFA is there is no acquisition cost, giving up a 1st kind of defeats that point.
The opportunity cost of a 1st is huge and I think it probably could have been used more effectively for a different asset.
|
These moves though, allow the Flames to maximize competing this year when Huberdeau and Weegar are on steal on contracts. If you don't make this deal and you keep the first and wait until Monahan contracts expires you also lose the opportunity to put forward an even better team this year which could be our best chance of winning it all in a long time.
I also think with all the conditions and likely the first in a 2025 first you could make it case those conditions are better than trading a 2nd in this draft to ditch Monahan as the 2023 draft is very deep and it's a prospect added to the pool 2 years earlier. If it is a 2024 first it's automatically 20th overall or later. Seeing how teams value picks now over picks down the road I wouldn't be shocked if our first is 20th overall or later that Montreal takes it and doesn't worry about a slightly better pick in 2025.
A late first is pretty overrated pick. It's quite often mentioned in previous trade idea involving players we were looking to trade away.

This screams Murray Edwards, could have moved Lucic for probably nothing. Have to pay a 1st so Murray can save $5MM. Joke.
