No, this is absolutely contributing to the cycle of mediocrity.

Thank you.

From my first pass at reading those conditions, I think the theme is that the deal is designed to minimize the chance that the flames will give the canadiens a top ten pick as part of this trade. They will receive a first round pick no matter what… but if the flames or panthers pick pick is in the top ten, the pick is deferred a year.

You’ll feel better if you just accept that the Flames were never going to do a scorched earth rebuild, so might as well just throw that out the window.

It makes them better in the next 2 years - which is clearly what they are trying to achieve at this point.

You have to add sweeteners to dump bad contracts in a flat cap world. It is what it is. I’m just glad it’s not 2023

You need to pick a new secondary team to cheer for. Seems like you are very into the burn it down mode which the Flames will never commit to. I get it but this team is painful that way haha

In effect, Tre playing with the extra 1st round pick he got from Florida to move Monahan. The opportunity-cost is signing Kadri. Given that he wants Kadri, this is a decent way to do it and is primarily funded by the great return he got for Tkachuk.
Yeah, he gave himself a little more protection than in the Hamonic trade, where he probably expected a high 20s pick and it turned into a mid-teens pick.

It's Monahan and a late first. Not that much different.

I mean at what point do you go for it? We are still are guaranteed to have three first round picks in the next three seasons, unlike Florida for example who in my opinion is easily worse on paper now.

On paper we have

- HHOF and Jack Adams winning head coach
- Vezina finalist goaltender
- Selke finalist top line center
- #2 leading point producer in the NHL last season
- Three incredibly gifted 200 foot centermen
- Arguably the deepest defensive core in the NHL

Those are cup contending pieces - and we still hold all of our top prospects and first round picks for the foreseeable future. We didn't mortgage our future to get here.

I don't see the problem.

Weird take considering they made their team significantly better today. This team is all in while our hall of fame coach came out of retirement to try and win this city a cup. They were dealt a devastating hand losing their top 2 point producers but salvaged the summer amazingly adding 2 top end forwards and a high end Dman.

This team is quite arguably better than last years team that is far from mediocre

Go for a walk, take up a new hobby. Maybe seek therapy. You're awfully negative for little reason.

I accepted it. However, with this Kadri signing, I believe that the Flames will have one season to hope it all clicks and win a Stanley Cup before the wheels start falling off.

Ultimately I think it hurts the team on both ends. Shortens their window and hampers the future.

Taketh and giveth I suppose.

This was a bad trade to make though. I suspect this is ultimately why we were able to land Kadri: if Lou was facing the same prospect of return on the pieces he needed to move out for cap I believe he decided to eat it.

So Basically the condition is this:

Montreal has the option to take the Flames 2024 1st if the pick is 20-32.

Otherwise it becomes complicated depending on whether Calgary gets Florida's pick or not and depending whether picks are top 10 or not.
