OK that is hilariously complex. It’s not even worth trying to understand

On the surface I agree, but not like BT would have shipped it out if there were other options to shed Monahan without it.

As per others points. We have to look at the entire summer as a sum of it's collectives.

BT fleeced the Panthers - he made them over pay substantially for Tkachuk IMO
In order to bring in Kadri - Montreal wins the trade with us on the Monahan dump, no doubt.

But put it all together, the win on the trade with the Panther's is far larger than the loss on the Mtl trade. He's doing what he needs to do.

I know it's the going rate, but losing a first to save ~8% of a teams cap for one season will always seem bonkers to me. Game-breaking players go in the mid to late first round all the time. A 2nd/3rd seems way more reasonable.

So if I'm reading that right, at some point Montreal gets a first round pick.

I am not upset at all that a 1st rounder is what it cost to sign Kadri.

Nope. Look at each trade in isolation.

The Tkachuk trade was a complete win. No need to turn around and spend that 1st like it’s burning a hole in your pocket.

I’m not sure id want to trade a 1st for 7 years of Kadri at $7M to be honest.

The whole point of overpaying a UFA is there is no acquisition cost, giving up a 1st kind of defeats that point.

The opportunity cost of a 1st is huge and I think it probably could have been used more effectively for a different asset.

It reminds me of playing army men with my friends when we were kids. They somehow made the rules so complicated that they never lost, ever.

But you still went along with it

From 30 goal scorer to having to pay to get rid of.
What a strange ending to Monny's career here.

That part will actively contribute to the mediocrity pretty quickly.

Serious question: Why do you even bother being a fan?
This is the OPPOSITE of a cycle of mediocrity.

The 1st allowed you to add Kadri, Monaghan is broken

Habs get Monahan and a first round pick one day between 2024 and 2026 depending on events. If Calgary gets hit by lightning and wins the 2025 lottery for 1OA, Fla gets an extra 3rd round pick as well.

So basically the Flames protected themselves in case their draft picks came in the top ~10, and at worst case could give up a high position in the 2025 draft (albeit not the first overall pick).

In effect, Tre playing with the extra 1st round pick he got from Florida to move Monahan. The opportunity-cost is signing Kadri. Given that he wants Kadri, this is a decent way to do it and is primarily funded by the great return he got for Tkachuk.
