I want no part of Barzal at $10M a year. That would be a super ugly contract, the guy is a second line C. I wouldn't trade Hanifin for him either.

He's in the final year of a multi-year contract, so he could sign an extension any time he wants to.

0.86 PPG centre over his career (362 games played), and 0.75 PPG in the playoffs (49 games played).
Pretty tough to argue he's a second line centre and not a first line centre.

It would have been the same but they changed the rules when they updated the CBA in 2020. The other contracts were grandfathered in with the old QO rules, but Barzal's was signed under the revised CBA, so it has the new rules.

No way you trade Coronato with Hanifin
1 of the biggest reasons I would trade Hanifin is of our d, he is most likely to get over paid in the near future. Barzal also could be in that same boat of getting over paid soon but Hanifin has an extra year at less than $5 mil which should have a ton of value.
Even this year Barzal at $7 mil vs Hanifin at $4.95 is a win for NYI
I'm not sure NYI is a great fit for Hanifin as well as they probably need a high end forward more than help on d

I don’t know about 10M but I would trade Hanifin for him without thinking twice.
They need a center/forward more than a dman. He is also young and better. I am also tired of McDavid making a fool out of Hanifin

If Treliving could lock up Barzal now for $8 mil a year for 7 or 8 years then I'd easily do Hanifin for Barzal.
Having the security of wrapping him up now is more valuable then the lower cap hit Hanifin has this season. But we can't be parting with top prospects when we have limited top prospects right now. Maybe Zary is the best guy I would include but not Coronato, Pelletier or Wolf

There should be an asterisk beside offensive stats of Islanders players considering how that team has played

100% agree and any time you can add a player who has that kind of speed and is a top line caliber player you need to take it if that is an option. Hanifin is a very good skater but Barzal is an elite skater.
Without Hanifin our d is still fine and he's probably getting $8 mil in 2 years
Barzal at $8 mil and for 8 years puts the Flames in a good spot as Gaudreau and Tkachuk probably cost $21 mil to keep for Huberdeau and Barzal at $18.5 mil. Both players have a year left at $12.9 mil and Weegar if he comes in at around $7 mil is a very good replacement for Hanifin and what should be a cheaper deal and is a much better PP option which the Flames need.
Overall it might not be any better but IMO it's close and no question we improved an center. Also would have a pretty good core wrapped up for many years and trying to figure out Lindholm and Hanifin in 2 years is less of a concern if Hanifin is gone.
We can sit back and draft and develop around a very good core that isn't old at this point. Really not a huge concern for age for 4 years other than Markstrom who might be a concern for age in 2 or 3 years

I'd take Barzal at 8.6 per, but I wouldn't back up the truck for the Isles to get him either, as in trading valuable prospects.
That Florida 1st I would put in play though, sure.

And if Markstrom is on the decline in 2-3 years, hopefully Wolf will be ready to take over or be the primary in a tandum.
I really would love for the flames to get Barzal. Of course there are better centres than Barzal in the league. I just think he is one that could be acquired and would be exactly what the flames need. I think he would a great fit as a playmaking center who gives the flames a different look up the middle that they have not had in a very long time.

Wolf is the future, and hopefully Markstrom can serve as his mentor for the last two seasons of his contract.
I'll give an outside shot to Vladar if he can take steps in his game. Not sure the team keeps him beyond this season though.

If Markstrom starts to decline and Wolf is ready to go then we aren't in too bad of a spot. Markstrom has 4 years left and I doubt he falls off a cliff for at least 2 years. Getting rid of short term bad contracts isn't that hard if need be.
Coleman could also be a long term deal that doesn't age well. But if the cap goes up big before his contract expires $4.9 mil might not be all that bad in a $90+ mil cap world.
Eventually the cap will start to increase by more than $1 mil some seasons and having a bunch of guys wrapped up long term with extra picks and a strong farm system is a good spot to be in. Most your players are in their prime too.

Apparently Bob Stauffer mentioned Brett Ritchie today, meaning the Oilers are looking at picking him up. Haha go right ahead

But are you saying he turns down other offers and instead stays by the phone in Calgary in hopes Treliving calls and gives him minimum for the chance to practice daily with the scratches?
|
Not in hopes, it’s the arrangement. He will be signed before camp, with the Flames, because he and his wife live and work in Calgary and he digs the situation. Gudbransson just got $4mil a year… Stone isn’t some unknown player.
