I'm really hoping they don't fill out the bottom six and leave 1-2 spaces for prospects. As much as having that other solid top 6 guy might be what sets the Flames over the top, so would having a couple prospects jump up into mid-six positions and putting up 40-60 points.

The more I think of it, the more the centre position really is a problem for the Flames.
Cap-wise, they're not in a bad spot as Backlund's deal expires at the same time Lindholm needs a (significant) raise, and I'd expect to see Lindholm get a massive payday next summer as they extend him a year prior to hitting free agency.
Monahan's money comes off the books after this season...but how do they improve the group? They need to push Backlund down from the 2 spot to the 3 spot, and it's hard to find play driving centres (which is also why Kadri is about to get $7M+ until he's 38/39).
Notable centres with expiring contracts in the coming year:
Nazem Kadri (UFA today)
Jonathan Toews (UFA 2023)
Ryan O'Reilly (UFA 2023)
Mathew Barzal (RFA 2023)
Sean Monahan (UFA 2023)
Nathan Mackinnon (UFA 2023)
Dylan Larkin (UFA 2023)
Pierre-Luc Dubois (RFA 2023)
Jordan Staal (UFA 2023)
Bo Horvat (UFA 2023)
DYlan Strome (RFA 2023)
Roope Hintz (RFA 2023)
Tage Thompson (RFA 2023)
Ivan Barbashev (UFA 2023)
Dylan Cozes (RFA 2023)
We know most of these players will end up extending with their current teams, so how do the Flames address the centre position in a meaningful way?
Toews would be a cool target as I think he has some game left and he doesn't want to be part of Chicago's rebuild. Perhaps he's a reasonable trade target for a short term fix, but other than that...the Flames need to swing a trade of pretty significant size to improve that position.
I expect they'll bet on Monahan coming back to some level of offensively relevancy for this season...but I just don't know if that's going to pay off. It'd be really cool if it did though

Horvat is always the one I wonder about.
Doesn't seem to be loved in Vancouver, has been mentioned in trade rumours, if he hits UFA I could see the Flames trying to get Tanev and Markstrom to talk up Calgary to him.

Reasonable and a price I would pay. Though who are you considering in the top 4: Hanifin, Tanev, Andersson, Kylington, Weegar.
I think the Flames have 5 top 4 D now. On some times Zadarov would be top 4.
I'm assuming you aren't talking Tanev or him.
So that leaves us with the others: Hanifin, Andersson, Kylington, Weegar.
As the bones of a deal I would look at Kylington+ for Necas or Necas+ for Hanifin.

Doubt the current Canes ownership would want Hanifin, especially being a year away from a new contract, considering they traded him off when he needed a new deal.

Back of the envelope....cap space for next year for a center seems to be around $6mm. Assumes Weegar signs for $7mm, some minimum contracts to round out depth, Wolf plays backup, and scratches are paper'd to the AHL team nightly. The following year is more complex if (Lindholm, Tanev, etc).
It's tight. I don't see how we go higher than $6mm for any term on a center without moving something out. I don't see how Kadri is an option.

^^ Its really too bad the Flames had so much on the go that Tre couldn't sneak in the deal the Kraken got for Bjorkstrand. That would have solved a ton.

He’s a heck of a player and I would be really happy if the Flames could land him. I heard he loves Vancouver though and that an extension is just a formality.
Trade for Konecny, who would be a natural fit anyway, and see if playing with his cousin could be a draw the next season.

Who is Konencny’s cousin on our team? I have been told his wife is from here and he lives here in the summer. He is definitely an intriguing target

Horvat and Konecny are second cousins
Toews at 40-50% retention for one-year would be nice. Still produced at over 0.5PPG on a bad team after a year off. He'd be a solid #2 option for the year, and then the Flames can decide if they want to keep him or dip into the free agent pool next offseason.
Sutter would probably love it too. Both former Blackhawks captains, and Sutter called him the best captain in hockey during those battles from 2012-14 when the Kings and Blackhawks were the two best teams in the west.

I meant trade for Konecny and maybe it would help draw Horvat when he hits free agency.

I’m not familiar with Necas at all, and I’m certainly not comparing the players, but all this talk reminds me a lot of how a large chunk of the board pined after Jarnkrok and claimed he’d be the 3C we needed.

Yeah I am pissed that they couldnt get in on this opportunity. The other one was pacioretty, but I am sure vegas wouldnt want him in division. Either way, two good top 6 RWs were in fact traded for virtually nothing this very off season.

I hear what you're saying, but all three of Necas' seasons so far have exceeded Jarnkrok's career high for pts. But they are definitely similar in the sense that their ability to play C is largely theoretical at this point.

Not comparable. Necas has serious upside, like top 2 C upside.
