He’s worth that, probably. But who trades their top line players like that, especially at this point? You need a team with an extra top line winger, who needs a 2-3 Dman. So who?

6x6 seems apt for Weegar.

I think a lot of teams need a top pairing dman that can play both sides. He is extremely valuable.

Pagnotta mentions the Flames and Weegar have already been talking but that is expected to pick up now that Kylington, Mangiapane, and Huberdeau are signed. I suspect he is inked before camp

I’m guessing 6x6-6.5mill for Weegar

Sure but do they have a top RW to give up, and can they afford to lose him?

And surely the Flames can also use a top pairing Dman who can play both sides.

Not sure why Weegar does that.

Not sure why the Flames do that., unless Weegar indicates it's two years or one.

Hopefully under 6.5 million per year.

Flames retains him for 3 yrs at reasonable cap rate
I didn’t think they would sign Mangi for just 3 yrs also

Yeah Weegar may not want to do that unless he bet himself for another contract later

If it's eight years, 6 million per should do it. That's 48 million for a guy who's made 8.5 so far in his career, I can't see him taking a risk and turning down that kind of a deal.

Take it for what it’s worth, but source close to the situation says Weegars perception is that he could get paid similar to Sergachev 8x8.5. I doubt he ends up getting that but the analytics do support him getting quite a bit, likely more than the 6-6.25 we’re hoping for

If Weegar wants 8x8 I'd be fine if they traded him

Agreed, great player but that would tie up way too much money. If they got him at 8x7 I wouldn’t love it but I’d allow it haha

If Weegar wants $8.5M
Maybe Flames offer $5.5M
Meet in the middle at $7M?

$7M is $500k more than I envisioned, but I'd still do it. That would put him just over Gio's $6.75 as the highest paid D in team hsitory

I admittedly never watched any Florida games, is he that good?

I'm a but concerned if we overpay from a position of excitement and them coming off the President's trophy.

I'm sure he does - but Sergachev is 24 and Weegar is 28 - its a big difference in terms of the length.

@salimvalji

A source says Mackenzie Weegar has a “strong, genuine desire” to re-sign in Calgary…I believe both parties will engage next week in conversations about an extension for the Flames defenceman
