That contract structure isn't great, the league needs to do something about these signing bonuses.

One thing I've been curious about as a guy who doesn't get advanced stats: if Huberdeau was on Florida's second line last year, how does the quality of his opposition matchups factor into his stats?

One thing about Johnny we know is how much opposing teams focused on him, and how good he was 5 on 5 despite this. I'm not sure Huberdeau looks as good when this - and power play points - are factored in.

I just worry he won't produce as well when he's the focal point of a team's defence, and without as much PP production.

Last few years might be ugly, but I might not be alive to worry or care. I'm over the moon right now.

I expect a 37 year old Huberdeau will skate better than a 27 year old Mattew Tkschuck.

I actually think he can be more productive as he will have much better linemates. I am not worried about his production.

He put up 115 points playing a large portion of the season with Sam Bennett.

He's not a B point/level superstar.

Tracking well over a PPG for four seasons now. Even Johnny wasn't nearly that consistently productive while playing with better talent and every one here was ready to accept 10.5 x 8 for him.

It's obviously more than what you'd like to pay. He will be thirty when the contract kicks in and to date his production in the playoffs, particularly goal wise is underwhelming.

But he is our best player. And it was unrealistic to think you could flip him again for a huge return and there is no way this team sees themselves as sellers at the deadline.

I wish the 8th year had gotten the club a discount given his age but just like with Gaudreau, the player has all the cards here. And the club saw what a disaster it was to go the brinkmanship route so they met the ask right out of the blocks. So it's totally understandable where they ended up.

I get Joe Thornton vibes from Huberdeau insofar as how they play the game. Thornton has been incredibly durable. If you look at how he progressed, his real decline started his age 37 season. Which would be the last year of this deal. But Jumbo was not the same player in his 30's that he was in his 20's. More of a point per game guy, not the scoring machine he was before.

I'm curious how those people who think the Flames dodged a bullet with Gaudreau feel about this signing.

Light salary throughout, big signing bonus each year, I assume paid each July 1 when calender season officially starts?

Huberdeau’s point ranking the last couple years:

1 Year: 2nd
2 Years: 3rd
3 Years: 3rd
4 Years: 4th
5 Years: 7th

He’s an elite forward when it comes to point production. The last three years might suck a little bit but sometimes you need to take that risk.

IMO Huberdeau was the focus of opposing teams defensively, Barkov faced the opposition top line.

However, Huberdeau also had Bennett, who is inferior to Lindholm. This will be more like when Huberdeau was on a line with Barkov a few years ago. And I don’t see how his PP time goes down.

The guy was pencilled in to be on the top line with Mackinnon and Mcdavid on team Canada.
But yeah not a star.

Might have. Why don't we worry about what might happen in a few years? It's like we are worrying about we might get hit by tornado and die.

I don't think you can overstate the significance of this for the organization and for the development of guys like Pelletier and Zary. This is going to pay dividends extending much further than the points he gets or the goals he scores.
Hmmm, the second time the Flames have went into Montreal and walked away with a prize much coveted by the Canadians.

And this is the issue with posters like you
They probably won’t win a cup with him. Because only one team does each year. The math is against them.
And Columbus probably won’t win a cup with Johnny
Florida probably won’t win a cup with Tkachuk
And you somehow think that makes you “right”
As others have said…what a terrible way to be a fan
