Gives them 20M to sign Mackinnon, Newhook and Byram. Girard likely bringing in a forward on an ELC to play on the third line and fill the ranks with other low priced players (like Cogliano and Helm veterans or Olausson type ELCs). MacKinnon with a 12x8, one of Byram or Newhook on a bridge contract and the other signed longterm taking up 8M, re-sign the other when the cap jumps.
I have no doubt an extension was discussed. Tre didn't head to Montreal just to ask Huberdeau if he likes things and stuff. Though that probably came up too.

Huberdeau was very straight forward in interviews saying that it's his agents job to discuss contracts and that it's his to play hockey. Maybe Brad just wanted to discuss the Flames and their plans of winning and bringing a cup to Calgary?
I don't really think it was the place to discuss an extension.

If anything he was probably discussing the desire to win and selling Huberdeau on being a top player in the league and on the team. Probably mentioned how lucky he felt when the Panthers agreed to include him in the deal. Making him feel wanted and comfortable was likely the goal

I'm sure indirectly, at the very least, it would be.
Might not be $$$ discussed or actual term, but the feeling out process of whether they'd like to be in Calgary long term is just as much a part of it.
IMO
I doubt Tre slid a contract across the table. But he may done that with the bill, in which case Huberdeau ain't staying.
A good interview with Peter Loubardias on the Rod Pedersen show.
He mentions(around 5:30 mark) that he won't be surprised to see another large move for the Flames this season. He's been right about such things more often than not.

Lou sounded emphatic here
Ryan Leslie and Zadorov also hinted at this after the Tkachuk trade.

Huberdeau is slated to be an unrestricted free agent next July, but Monday’s meal was simply a first step for Treliving in introducing himself and the organization and starting to sell the setup whiz on a long-term stay in Calgary.
“We just made a trade for the guy and to me, you have to get to know each other,” Treliving explained. “He doesn’t know who I am and I’d never met Jonathan before, so it just gives us a chance to learn a little bit about each other and get to know each other and build a relationship and give him a little insight into what we’re thinking about the team.
“You’re talking about a player who is a top player in the league. He’s been in one place for his entire career. Like anybody, it’s a shock when (the trade) first happens, so you want to give him a few days to let him catch his breath and decompress a little bit and take it all in, and then I thought it was important to get out there and get in front of him and visit with him and answer any questions he has, rather than talking on the phone. It was just a get-to-know-ya, and that’s what was important. It was important for him. It was important for me. I was really impressed with him, a real sharp guy. Obviously, he’s experienced about the league. He’s been in the league a long time. He’s had a lot of success in the league. He’s excited about the opportunity coming up. He’s excited about the change. To me, you just have to build those relationships. That’s what that was about.”

Just heard from a super inside source we just signed Huby for 8 years. Throwing it on the forum because I want to. Don’t kill me if it’s not true. But the source is very very very close to the team.
