Give it some time for GM and Agent to negotiate.
The dinner in Mtl was purely for GM to build rapport with the player and establish the interests and intentions from both sides - the human part.
Assuming both sides are "feelin it", now it's time for Brad and Allen to talk business.

It hasn't even been two weeks since the trade and the players haven't even come to Calgary yet.
As others have already pointed out, Lindholm wasn't signed until 3 weeks after the trade in 2018 and Hanifin was more than 2 months after. Lindholm's was signed with a pending arbitration date and both players were unsigned RFAs at the time of the trade, so there was much more urgency to get those deals done.
Even if things are progressing well on extensions, I suspect nothing will be announced until the player is in town later this month at the earliest.

Jets sold Copp, but it would be hard not to at the return. It's certainly plausible that they were just stubborn on a price for Stastny, but it seems nobody made a convincing enough offer.

Pretty sure we've only seen a few significant guys extend 1 year early so far, and all have been RFAS (3 guys on Tampa and R Thomas)
There are tons of 1 yr to UFA guys who are likely to extend early that haven't yet:
MacKinnon
Pastrnak
Miller/Horvat
Larkin
Bertuzzi
ROR/Tarasenko

I doubt Miller or especially Tarasenko get extended unless in a sign-and-trade.

Miller is going to get a bazillion dollars in Free agency.
Doubt any of the other guys make it, if ever Mack did though I would offer him McDavid money without batting an eye.

If he made it to free agency MacKinnon should get offers in the range of $14/15 m.

The Avs probably owe him about 50 million in back pay for how he's outperformed his contract. I am guessing there is no way he gets to UFA and the Avs will be very generous with their offer.

But they'll have 9 spots to fill.

GOAT!

I can't imagine Huberdeau signing before he actually plays any games here first. He doesn't even know if he has any chemistry with Lindholm, or what it's like to play for Sutter or how the facilities at the Dome impact the grind months, etc etc.
I could see Weegar maybe signing early, but not Huberdeau.

well, those are things are important, but if they were the be-all and end-all, no UFA could ever sign somewhere new. And at the same time, Huberdeau is coming off a 115 point season ... the time to cash in is now. Why risk a subpar season or injury if you can sign a fat 8 year deal now after a career year? We'll see. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if Huberdeau re-signed long-term way before the start of the season.

Arguably the fear of not having chemistry with Lindholm is a reason to sign. He'd be paid as a "115 player" if he signed today with very little chance of increasing his value to the Flames over the season. If they lack chemistry and he falls back down to a point-per-game level, he might significantly impact the last contract he's likely to sign.

He said clearing cap space, not fitting a full roster in.
If they need to move someone for multiple skaters in return to fill out a roster, Rantanen, Landeskog, Nichushkin, Lekhonen, Girard, Manson, Toews, Makar, Georgiev or Francouz are all easily moveable.
The only signed players they have next summer that might not have takers are their cheapest in MacDermid and O'Connor.
should be fun to watch them fit 23

Every day Huberdeau waits potentially costs him. He won’t get $84M as a UFA, and if he’s not sure how he’ll gel with Sutter or Lindholm, it’s all the more reason for him to secure that bag now - even a 70 point season would be disastrous for his value as a 30 year old winger, to say nothing of what could happen if he tears a knee up or something.
Not that I think either is likely, but it’s certainly not impossible.
Flames just need to make the contract as signing bonus heavy and buyout-proof as they can legally do, and I think the money wins out.
I refuse to believe that we can’t pay Canadian superstars $10.5M a year to play in Calgary.

If he doesn't sign before the season starts, he needs to be traded IMO.
Players sign all the time without playing with new linemates etc.
See Johnny, Tkachuk, every UFA.

This! Plus he will likely get a full no trade/no move, so he has all the power. Hates Calgary or Sutter or his Teammates he can just request a trade. The top 50 players in the league over the age of 27 really hold all the cards. Makes the most sense to cash in and worry about everything else later.
