He only has $1million left in salary to be paid.

$875k in actual dollars owed for $5.25 million in cap. At $875k he's a steal.

Less than $1 million owed as the Oilers retained.

At that cap hit I would have thought 4-6 years would have been the term. 35 goals one year but never hit 60pts. He either plays well and goes for a long term poorly aging deal or moves on.

Not the best deal in my opinion.

Unless you are pretty darn sure about a player, it's better to keep them hungry with shorter terms. I feel more sure about Mangi than OK, but I really like both deals.

From an asset mgmt standpoint, the team is poised for a strong start to the next rebuild, but also have the flexibility to manoeuvre if they somehow become a sustained contender.

Mangiapane was 22nd in the NHL in Even Strength Goals per 60, one spot behind Laine. If he gets more PP time, look out.

His linemates:

Backlund: 12 goals
Coleman: 16 goals

Neither were exactly offensive dynamos.

Good deal. Not great, but a good deal for the team and player. Need to dump Lucic and add another forward with similar scoring ability.

I like the term from a Flames standpoint. If Gives Mange huge motivation to perform in the next 3 years to maximize his next contract. That means he will be gunning to consistently score 30+ these next few years during Flames' window for winning. If they get Huberdeau and Weegar extended, all of a sudden Flames have a solid 3+ year contention window.

Superb deal! I thought it would take 6x6 to keep Mang past this upcoming season. Great work by Tre!!!

I don't understand why people assume a longer deal would have been more money?

Price is a little high, term is great for the flames. If Mang earns this contract he should be contributing to a good team that attracts players, but a small second line scoring winger is exactly the type of player that can disappear in his early 30, for Mang to get a longer higher total value contract, if I were the flames I would have asked for lower aav.

I bet many didn't predict that out of Gaudreau, Tkachuk, and Mangiapane - it would be Mangiapane who remains a Flame.

Because with an RFA the salary goes up if you buy UFA years.

Because they would be buying more UFA years. Mang scored 35 goals last year without playing on the top line and with only limited PP time. He could be a 40+ goal scorer if playing with top line talent. Plus, his advanced stats were quite impressive last season. However, only 55 total points. $5.8AAV is a price that makes sense for both team and player.

He was trade bait until Johnny walked and Tkachuk was traded.

We did not have the money to sign him till now.

Plus they have a few forwards presently counting who could be completely buried if they are sent down: Pelletier, Lewis, Bishop and Jones. And if Monahan is LTIR that’s a big piece as well.

This is a great deal from the Flames standpoint, who often signs players a year or two too long for a million or two too much (see Gio, Backlund, Lucic - a byproduct of Neal, etc. The list goes on - Coleman's next)

Disagree with Gio, he was pretty good throughout his contract with the Flames. The guy even won a norris. Expansion draft worked out well that it was his last year of his contract. Backlund, i'm also okay with given what he does for this team.

Ok deal. Needs to work on consistency and being able to score both away and home games.
