Lamoriello didn’t trade the 13th overall pick for a player they expect to play on the third pairing. They clearly think he’s a second-pairing guy.

The Barzal talk is so annoying. He’s not being traded as it makes absolutely no sense for the Islanders. He’s one of their few top players that isn’t on the backside of his career. Lou simply isn’t as dumb of a GM as some of you seem to think he is.

I have no doubt that he’ll play in their top-4. I guess we’ll see how well he does.

You're probably right, but people said the exact same thing about Dougie Hamilton when he was a Bruin.
You never know what's going on behind the scenes, and Lou is notoriously secretive.

He just fired the head coach for Barzal. That’s what went on behind the scenes. Same as the Bruins in that he fired the coach in hopes of retaining players not trading them.

We just traded Tkachuk? Barzal is 25 and can resign this summer but hasn’t so I think the idea he could be traded is legit
If NYI doesn’t land Kadri they literally have done nothing this off season to get Barzal help. He might be interested in moving on rather than resigning

Some people are just totally unimaginative and thus get angry and confused when others display this confounding ability around them. EE for example would never have been able to u derstand the huby trade.

Even if he did hit waivers there is a priority list...so most teams can't get him for free

LOL you don’t think I could understand that to fit Tkachuk in that a high paid roster player or two had to go back? It’s straight up math. Sounds by your tone you are angry about my opinion. Look, I’m like a lot of posters that enter the thread periodically in hopes that a rumor nugget is unearthed. Instead it’s been polluted by a small handful of posters discussing their Barzal trade fantasy over and over like Treliving wants another big name player on an expiring contract when he’s already got a lot on his plate.

I don't see the Isles moving Barzal. As a separate issue, Lamoriello hasn't been a very good GM lately. Moving Toews and Leddy. Then realizing he has depleted his blueline, has to spend an asset to acquire Romanov

Hell, according to some here, not knowing his star player was gaslighting about extending was a fireable offence.

Tkachuk didn't want to be here. I don't see the Islanders trading their number 1 center.

Look, I like Barzal quite a bit. But there’s no way he’s being traded unless he wants out. The ask for him is gonna be steep anyways

He traded Devon Toews, fired Barry Trotz, and forces his players to shave
Dumb might not be the right term but he shouldn’t be running an NHL team at 80 and has done dumber things than trading a 70 point center who’s asking for $$$

I am just analogizing. If that made Treliving a bad GM, then it makes Lou one as well.

I don't think he should be fired for it, but he is definitely responsible for the way things played out.
I think of it as analogous to poker. If you think you have a good hand but also know that it is beatable, but still put all your chips in and lose, that's on you. It's probably fine if you are a very rich person and can recover from it quickly, but if you are poor and you make that gamble, you are a fool. The Flames are not an organization that should be gambling on franchise players.

What should Tre have done instead?

I think the poker analogy is a good one.
You have to play the odds, knowing that there will be times that it won’t go your way. But in the big picture you’ll win more than you lose.
I think Treliving felt the odds were in his favour, but the fairly low chance of loss got him. I would disagree he put all his chips in though.
So if you think you should fire a poker player who loses on a strong hand occasionally, then soon there won’t be any poker players left.
