Tkachuk wanted money, lifestyle, and a chance to win and Florida provides all of those in spades right now. Barkov is 27, Ekblad 26, Tkachuk 24, Spener Knight is 21. Lundell looks like a nice piece and guys like Bennett, Reinhart, Duclair are all in that 26-27 age range. Living near Miami making 9.5M in a no state income tax location is a nice spot to be as one turns 25.
Considering Treliving may have got 5 quarters for a dollar when everyone expected him to get 2-3 makes this an easier divorce. I wanted Tkachuk to be the next captain but oh well we got some great pieces to build around that is easily to argue made our team better next year than had he signed. Just need 2 extensions for Huby and Weegs and this franchise altering deal will be complete

Not the first time elite talent has been attracted to play in Miami for a professional sports team.

Makes sense Chucky found a way to maximize his take home on his big pay day. The contract wasn't going to get better if he stayed and walked and managed to help the Flames help him.
Now the Flames just need to make some more moves .

I can’t believe we’re actually arguing that people would rather live in coastal cities with nice weather. Just look at a population density map, it’s not rocket appliances.

Top domestic migration destinations:
1. Florida
2. Texas
3. Arizona
4. North Carolina
5. South Carolina
6. Tennessee
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._net_migration
Five of the reported teams on Tkachuk’s list are based in those states, and the other is his hometown. Seems lots of people besides Matthew Tkachuk like warm weather and low taxes.

The list I’ve seen reported by multiple sources was:
Tampa
Florida
Carolina
Dallas
Nashville
St Louis
Of those, Florida, Carolina, and St Louis made pitches.

From what I recall the list of teams that came out from a few sources was discredited.
After that we really didn't hear a list again ... just rumbling from media in the areas that thought they'd have a chance.
I think the only thing concrete we've heard was St. Louis, Carolina and Florida.

The initial list making the rounds pre-trade (that included NJD and NYI) was refuted. Pundits since the trade have cited the six teams I listed. These are the same sources that reported offers from STL, CAR, and FLO. It’s all ‘sources say’ stuff, so I suppose none of it (including the STL and CAR offers) is concrete.

And that the other 2 teams were not realistic destinations, probably due to being unable to make it work from a cap point of view.
We could speculate on potential markets those could have been. Perhaps Tampa (since Florida was on the list), and NYR?

I think the lower profile low tax angle here was pretty accurate. I can believe that he wanted no part of New York or New Jersey which are high tax, and more Liberal than the other reported places.
It will be interesting to see in the next 10 years if these lower tax jurisdictions show a tangible benefit in terms of being better teams due to getting better value for their cap dollar.

I believe Vegas was also on the list and Nevada also is free from state income tax and has the weather advantage

Any idea who was on Gadurea's trade list? IIRC he could list 5 teams to which he would accept a trade. I wonder if Columbus was on his list.

I see Huberdeau as a slight upgrade on Gaudreau (simply because of size).
Our defence has improved
Goaltending is steady
If, with the extra minutes, Mangiapane can replace a chunk of tkachuks production, we are in pretty fair shape.

If both re-sign the Flames will be in an excellent position for the next 3-4 years. We'll have a legit #1 goaltender, one of the deepest defence cores, and, hopefully, 1-2 of our higher end forward prospects will solidify themselves as legit mid six NHL forwards, giving the team solid forward depth.
Then in the summer of 2023, the Flames will have a lot of cap space to add another big name forward. The Flames have no bad contracts signed past this season.
And Huberdeau is the real deal. He has all the vision that Gaudreau has, but does not get bullied off pucks like Gaudreau did.

Let’s be real unless the wheels completely fell off the team this year there was no way they were trading Huberdeau during the season and would have walked him to free agency had they not got the deal done. The contract extension turns this trade into a massive W for Calgary. This does not impact the W/L for the Panthers. Panthers made a fine play turning 28/29 year olds in the last year of their deal into a 24 year old who signed for 8 years is a solid deal for them.
The fact the Flames have Huberdeau locked up just makes this a massive win especially when you consider the lack of leverage Treliving had in the negotiation. Works out very well for the Flames to find a team who was willing to shake it up the way they did.
I hope the Panthers hit a rough patch in 25 and 26 so the Flames can add another key piece in the draft. I believe the Flames will get Weegar signed and let’s see what Schwindt turns into.
Just an incredible deal all things considered. Glad Chucky really wanted to go to Florida.

It'll be really interesting to see how Tkachuk/Huby/Weegar each look in ~5 years relative to their contracts.

Plus now that Huberdeau got his big contract he'll be able to hang with Lanny and the other rich guys here in the 'f you money' lounge.
