I'm pretty glad my kids arent elite hockey players.
This isn't sexual assault against women, but it is hazing, and I think it comes from the same twisted morality. Maybe it was posted before, but I didnt see it.
* In the statement of claim, Carcillo alleges that during showers, rookies were required sit in the middle of the shower room naked while the older players urinated, spat saliva and tobacco chew on them. At least once, the lawsuit alleges, head coach Jeff Perry walked into the shower room while this was occurring, laughed and walked out. “It wasn’t just that,” Munce said. “We all sat completely naked wrapped around each person in front of us, like a canoe, and we were supposed to sing Row, Row, Row Your Boat as they sprayed aerosol cans on our shoulders to try to make them burn.”
* The lawsuit alleges rookies were repetitively hit on their bare buttocks with a sawed off goalie stick, developing large welts and open sores. The injuries were so bad that they couldn’t sit down, even while attending local high school classes. They advised team staff of this abuse, which did not stop. “Then they put holes in (the stick) to make it faster,” Munce said. “If you got hit with it and flinched, you got hit again. You could actually see on guys’ butts the air holes that were put on the paddle from where it hit.”
* The lawsuit also alleges that on road trips, rookies would be stripped naked and sent into the bus bathroom, eight at a time. The older players would tape the boys’ clothes up in a ball, which were thrown into the bathroom. The boys were not allowed out until they were dressed, which could take hours. Older players would pour chew, saliva, and urine on them through the bathroom vents. This was once a common practice with junior hockey teams and has been known as ‘the hot box.’ “That has been happening forever,” Munce said, “and no one has ever said, ‘This is a bad thing?’ ”
* Carcillo alleged in the lawsuit that rookies had to bob for apples in a cooler filled with the older players’ urine, saliva and other bodily fluids. Munce corroborated this.
* It is also alleged an instance where a naked rookie was taped to a table with his buttocks in the air. Older players were whipping him with a belt. It is alleged Perry took part, whipped the child and laughed while the boy cried. “(The players) came up with a thing they called Rookie of the Day and they drew names out of a hat,” Munce said. “I came in from school one day and saw (the player) taped to the table and they were going to town on him with whatever they had…belts, things like that.”
* Munce also said at one point that season, a Jewish teammate was taunted by one of the members on the team who put black tape on his upper lip and did an impersonation of Adolph Hitler. He also said there were often incidents of racism on that team. “Guys would drop the N-word like it was nothing,” Munce said.
That’s some depraved stuff even for young guys. Did any of them make it to the NHL I wonder.
Assuming this was when Carcillo was a rookie, there were guys with a cup of coffee: Kris Newberry, Dan Fritche (who was also a rookie so maybe a victim), Drew Larman (also a rookie), Michael Haley (a 16 year old).
There’s no context that makes hazing ok and while people can be spit on and pissed on if that’s what they like, doing it to people who don’t want it is definitely not excusable with “boys will be boys.”

Saying this as someone whose had chew thrown on them and been pissed on in the shower.
That’s boys. Boys will be boys, if that upsets you, #### off.

Boys piss on an electric fence. Boys don't piss on other people. This is not a boys will be boys thing. This is a "I was raised wrong and need some therapy" thing

I had a friend who played in the MJHL and told me about some gross hazing incidents in that league.
The Neepawa Natives of the MJHL had a hazing incident in 2011 as well.
NSFW!
The president of the Neepawa Natives says the future of his hockey team is in jeopardy after a high-profile hazing incident.
Dave McIntosh said the incident, which has been widely reported, has taken its toll on him, his team and the whole community in western Manitoba.
"It's taken a piece of my life away. These guys are 18, 19 and 20 [years old]. If they're anything at all like me, it's been hard for them to deal with," he said.
The parents of a 15-year-old player who came forward with hazing accusations told CBC News last week their son was forced to dance in the team's dressing room and drag around water bottles tied to his genitals.
Hockey Canada not being serious enough and glossing over these cases. Treating each as a one-off. This organization needs to be completely restructured.
But more deeply, who hasn't thought it was odd/unnatural to see kids drafted at 15 and move on their own to another town....away from the protection and guidance of parents. I always marveled at how tough that decision must be and commended these kids for acting so professional despite their age. But the repeated abuse these kids have given and received amongst each other and by adults for decades is kind of a pattern isn't it? It's Lord of the Flies in Moosejaw et al. These kids don't come to HC and suddenly go off the rails.
This #### has been going on for decades at the CHL level in small towns where they learned it away from their parents and beyond their protection.

I think this understates how excellent most billets are at being pseudo-parents. I don’t think these outcomes are materially different if kids were living at home versus with billets.

No one should lay any blame at the feet of the billets.
But IMO it is undeniable how weird the CHL set up is, sending 15 and 16 year olds far away from home to focus on hockey, playing in front of crowds cheering their every move.
Tell me this is the ideal environment for developing responsible young men.

Yep. I can’t think of any other sports where kids are sent away from home at 15-16 to play in what are effectively professional leagues in towns where they’re treated like professional athletes. The whole model of the CHL fosters toxic behaviour.

Ya. No way am i saying billets are to blame. Many excellent ones from stories you hear.
It's more that no matter how good billets are, they aren't parents.
As for other sports...i was thinking the same thing. Football, hoops, baseball, lacrosse, etc almost all go through high school. Hockey in the US is often connected to high school. But Canada because of the dispersed population needs to go with club. However gymnastics, figure skating seem to develop outside of highschool. Other sports have their share of abuse/harassment stories.
Would be an interesting and valuable study....rates of abuse amongst underage people living with parents vs away across different sports.

Main points being - she has passed a lie detector test about her allegations (not admissible in court), and she did speak with Hockey Canada and the police when she initially made her claims.
