I'm pretty glad my kids arent elite hockey players.

This isn't sexual assault against women, but it is hazing, and I think it comes from the same twisted morality. Maybe it was posted before, but I didnt see it.

That’s some depraved stuff even for young guys. Did any of them make it to the NHL I wonder.

Assuming this was when Carcillo was a rookie, there were guys with a cup of coffee: Kris Newberry, Dan Fritche (who was also a rookie so maybe a victim), Drew Larman (also a rookie), Michael Haley (a 16 year old).

Many of them did. Half of the NHL players that were developed out of the CHL & Jr A are ####ting their pants about this movement.

Hot take: context is important. There’s no context in any of this.

I had a friend who played in the MJHL and told me about some gross hazing incidents in that league.

There’s no context that makes hazing ok and while people can be spit on and pissed on if that’s what they like, doing it to people who don’t want it is definitely not excusable with “boys will be boys.”

Boys piss on an electric fence. Boys don't piss on other people. This is not a boys will be boys thing. This is a "I was raised wrong and need some therapy" thing

The Neepawa Natives of the MJHL had a hazing incident in 2011 as well.

Did you also do it to others, seeing as you figure nothing was wrong with it?

Seems to be two issues.

Hockey Canada not being serious enough and glossing over these cases. Treating each as a one-off. This organization needs to be completely restructured.

But more deeply, who hasn't thought it was odd/unnatural to see kids drafted at 15 and move on their own to another town....away from the protection and guidance of parents. I always marveled at how tough that decision must be and commended these kids for acting so professional despite their age. But the repeated abuse these kids have given and received amongst each other and by adults for decades is kind of a pattern isn't it? It's Lord of the Flies in Moosejaw et al. These kids don't come to HC and suddenly go off the rails.

This #### has been going on for decades at the CHL level in small towns where they learned it away from their parents and beyond their protection.

I think this understates how excellent most billets are at being pseudo-parents. I don’t think these outcomes are materially different if kids were living at home versus with billets.

Maybe they should just shut down hockey?

No one should lay any blame at the feet of the billets.

But IMO it is undeniable how weird the CHL set up is, sending 15 and 16 year olds far away from home to focus on hockey, playing in front of crowds cheering their every move.

Tell me this is the ideal environment for developing responsible young men.

Yep. I can’t think of any other sports where kids are sent away from home at 15-16 to play in what are effectively professional leagues in towns where they’re treated like professional athletes. The whole model of the CHL fosters toxic behaviour.

Ya. No way am i saying billets are to blame. Many excellent ones from stories you hear.

It's more that no matter how good billets are, they aren't parents.

As for other sports...i was thinking the same thing. Football, hoops, baseball, lacrosse, etc almost all go through high school. Hockey in the US is often connected to high school. But Canada because of the dispersed population needs to go with club. However gymnastics, figure skating seem to develop outside of highschool. Other sports have their share of abuse/harassment stories.

Would be an interesting and valuable study....rates of abuse amongst underage people living with parents vs away across different sports.

The female who made the 1st accusation has given an interview to The Globe and Mail:
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/cana...wed-by-police/

Main points being - she has passed a lie detector test about her allegations (not admissible in court), and she did speak with Hockey Canada and the police when she initially made her claims.
