Small sample size unless you are of the opinion that Brett Kulak is an elite defensman.

Duncan Keith was their worst dman by those metrics, so that should help them a bit with his retirement.

Judging by the company he's in on that chart, in terms of defending the blue line - yes he is.

Brett Kulak in Brick Wall territory...Guess we should have kept him.

I think peak Monahan was comparable scorer. He just wasn't as flashy about it - fewer big slappers. Lindholm has the ability to score and it's been steadily getting better and better.

Sillinger is completely unproven. 16 goals, 31 points as a rookie. OK, but no better than Lindholm or even Bennett and well below Monahan (without Gaudreau).

It's an ok middle of the pack top 6 but with they've got really awful defense and below average goaltending. Laine is a bit like Monahan pre-decline in that he's got a good shot and not good for much else.

Gaudreau will have trouble getting the puck. They don't have the horses to possess the puck like the Flames have or defense for a good transition game. It will be like the Hartley era all over again for Gaudreau where they get peppered and rely on rope-a-dope to score some goals. The CBJ are not looking good.

Yeah it's comparable.

Laine had 176 goals in his first 6 seasons (0.43 goals per game - 407 games)

Monahan had 172 goals in his first 6 seasons (0.37 goals per game - 471 games)

And not like Laine was playing with scrubs. Those Jets teams had lots of offensive talent - Scheifele, Wheeler, Ehlers, Connor, Statsny, etc

Yes, if the other team is just standing around watching Gaudreau and Laine pass the puck around. In PP Gaudreau might be able to feed Laine for one timer, during 5 on 5, he has to be able to get the puck or keep the puck. Is Jenner a good defensive center? If not, they are going to see a lot of break away going the other way.

Not sure if this has been shared, but Allan Walsh says...
  • Jonathan Huberdeau was 'very honest' about being open to staying here long-term...
  • There were NO discussions between Flames and Walsh/Huberdeau before the trade; Calgary made the trade having 'no idea' if he'd be open to staying or not.

Huberdeau convo @ 8:02, these specific bits around 12:30.

Even with no idea, it was still a good trade and by far the best they were going to get for assets.

Have no issues with them taking these players blind. It was really a 'start the car' type of situation. You worry about that #### later and just get it done before Zito regains his sanity.

I mean on one hand that's pretty crazy about not even looking into whether Walsh/Huberdeau would have interest in a long term contract in Calgary... on the other hand maybe it just shows there's no reason for Treliving to think he wouldn't be interested, and the whole "Calgary isn't a desired destination" thing is overblown by recency bias.

I'd agree that you take that trade every time!
Just found the clarity interesting since there was a lot of speculation that Treliving and co had chatted with them and had some sort of agreement in motion.

To hear none of that transpired just brings more context

Agreed, and worst case if Huberdeau doesn't want to sign here, hopefully they find out reasonably soon and just flip him for other assets.

I recall Huberdeau (and possibly also Treliving) saying that discussions between management and his agent had started right after the trade. I suspect any insinuation that there were conversations beforehand likely misconstrued the timing on this bit of information.

Especially since Tkachuk did have a defined timeframe on when they needed to get a deal done. Flames got a monster return I can’t see another team even coming close to that type of offer. A higher scoring forward, top pairing D, 1st rounder, and a prospect who looks like he can play in the league is a massive return
