Not to be a negative Nellie but we’ll probably be wondering this all over again in a few years..

It’s too early to say much about our 2nd round pick this year but I can’t help but wonder why not swing for the fences and draft someone like Trikozov, Hutson who went in 2 of the next 3 picks. Both have significant ceilings but lower floors.

I find it crazy to draft based on expected floor because that usually means the player should become a 3rd liner/top 6 dman.

I’d always be looking for that high end upside.

I sat next to Craig Button on a flight back to Calgary in March that year and asked him his thoughts on the draft, he said there's this Calgary kid playing for Brooks named Cale Makar that could turn into the best player in the draft. I said who?

As bad as Button was as a GM he's been very good about the draft for many years now.

He’s a good 2nd pair puck moving dman. Good mobility, can run secondary PP, breakout of the zone and fill in higher if needed.

He’s small, not overly physical and lacks true top end skill so he isn’t perfect but he is a player any team could use and isn’t overpaid at $5M.

I think with Colorado already having Makar, Byram and Toews they could probably move Girard and not really miss him until injuries arise. Kind of a luxury they might not be able to afford anymore.

Given Byram’s emergence, I would be looking at moving him and re-signing Kadri if I was Sakic. I don’t think Newhook is ready to be a 2C and Compher isn’t really meant for that role.

If only he thought the same about Marty St Louis.

Thanks for that, much appreciated. Was wondering is there was a space where the Flames get Girard, perhaps at a discount since the Avs may want the space, and then package up Hanifin and perhaps a draft pick to get some more elite forward help. Girard is locked up for 4 more seasons at $5MM while Hanifin has 2 years remaining at $4.95MM. Obviously think Girard is a downgrade to Hanifin, but could get us a useful top winger or centerman.

I am in no way down on Hanifin, just wondering about getting a good return on some of our assets and defense is a position of strength.

Yea I don’t necessarily disagree with you. I think we have the option to use our defensive depth to fill the void up front.

For me:

Andersson - is our rock, our cornerstone guy who is signed long-term and can be part of the foundation on the backend.

Tanev - our best dman last year, we really struggled against Edmonton because he was out/not healthy enough to be effective.

Kylington - big fan of his potential still as I think he has more offence to give and his defensive game has come a long way but still needs some refinement.

Weegar - shiney new toy who is an analytics darling and seemingly one of the best dmen in the league.

Zadorov - just re-signed him and he loves it here, not really in the cards to trade a guy who comes back under those circumstances.

Given Hanifin is a UFA in a couple years he might be the most suitable to ship off.

Hanifin might also get you the best return. Obvious choice as he’s American too.

I’d be ok to bridge Kylington at $2.75

Sign mangiapane long term

Trade Lucic or Monahan

Trade Hanifin and Zary for Necas. Sign Necas long term

Do you think it would take both Hanifin and Zary for Necas. He was highly touted going into last season but was not vey good this year. I really like Necas, mentioned last season about trading Tkachuk for him and Teravainen prior to last season. He would be good to groom for second line center

Yeah, no freaking way am I trading Hanifin for Necas, forget about Zary.

Top-pairing 25 year old defenceman at a great $4.95M for 2 more years >>> Necas

Never said Hanifin plus for Necas, never insinuated it would take Hanifin to get Necas…. Just commented I like Necas.

No to Toews. The guy doesn't have nearly the same speed he once did, is one year older, and would require giving up assets for taking on a high salary. I don't mind the piecemeal approach but to give up assets while taking on his contract just for his name, and past leadership experience? Naa, hard pass.

A third line forward, something we don’t need, but ok, you do you.

I would entertain a Toews for Monahan swap but the Hawks would need to retain and it makes absolutely no sense for them therefore not a deal that gets done.

If the Flames keep the exodus of US based core players going I do wonder what type of forward we could get from Hanifin? Konecny? Flyers likely would only do that if they were flipping Provorov for another forward.

Ok, not sure I would silo a 23 yr old C/RW with 0.6 pts/g in his career as a 3rd liner but as you say you do you. Necas would be our 2nd RW and eventual 2nd line center.

And Hanifin is currently a young first pairing D-man on a team trying to win.
But, whatever dude. Stay on the Sofa. Probably get him on NHL22.
