In hindsight Makar is obviously #1 but at that time how do you get into the top 4 to select him?

Teams aren't giving away top 5 draft picks
Just got swept in the first round by Anaheim, and missed the playoffs the year prior. Unfortunately, this discussion goes back to the 2015 playoff win vs the Canucks and how it gave the illusion that the team was a lot closer to being a contender than it actually was. Would have been better to spend assets moving up in the 2017 draft than spending them on Hamonic & Elliott.

Idk I’d rather just keep Monny plus the assets and hope he does better

Anyone could go back and say this. Sure Makar is from Calgary but you can make the case that you should trade up to top 4 every year. But some years you would think you’re getting the better prospect but you aren’t and what is the cost?

You can now say we should have trade 16 and Gaudreau for 4. We lost Gaudreau for nothing so it’s a no brainer

Toews gets a bad rap because he's obviously not as good as he used to be and he has a $10.5 million cap hit, but he's still pretty good.

Has that cup winning pedigree, plays strong two way hockey, is maybe the best face off guy in the league still, he's usually up near 60% in the dot.

I'd love to see him on the Flames if the price wasn't idiotic, and they retained.

I’d prefer Toews. He missed an entire season so last year could be a 1 off. He’s also an elite face off guy

Trade monahan
Trade lucic
Trade kylington

Sign Mangiapane trade for toews. I bet Toews will be cheap even at 50% retained

Toews at 50% retained would be like adding another Backlund to our center group. Still a 40 point guy (at least) and a strong two-way player. With the right team and coach maybe puts up more than 40 points.

A Backlund who has the experience of winning three Cups and also wins almost 60% of his face offs.

Really hard to say when Monahans returning and the team sure isn't letting anything slip, as usual.

Maybe he's like Taresenko, who was injured and who's play reduced for a few years to the point that Seattle wouldn't take him for free! He did well last year!

You never know what's going to happen until the fat lady sings or how Mgt. views him. They don't seem to care how fans view him I've noticed.

He was good on face offs. If he can shoot like he used too and picks up 10-15 goals or more he has a trade value at the dead line.

If he recovers and snipes 23 like he did his 1st year why trade for an older Toews. I think the team does want him as an asset of some kind. They can't trade for anything the day after he's cleared to play. He's got to play 20-30 games just for the team and Sutter to find out.

What does everyone think it would cost to trade for Kakko? I know NYR are in a tight spot and a 4m offer sheet could work, but I wonder if theres a way to trade for him and sign him to a cheaper bridge deal than that?

Maybe the second we'd give up in that offer sheet and Valimaki? they only have five Dmen signed at the moment.

Tough to say how high they value him right now given his draft pedigree.

If we can get him, maybe Sutter can work his magic and he can pop if given a bigger role with Huby and Lindholm?

Fans focusing in on one or two mistakes when the player does an awful lot of good is where that reputation comes from.

People expecting defencemen to be perfect are misguided.

I think Big Z will take a step this year as well playing with a much better partner (everyone on our defence this year is better than Gudbranson).

That is quite unfortunate.

Weegar played a fairly large sample size without Ekblad as Ekblad got hurt.

His numbers were off the charts good away from Ekblad

Weegar also played a ton of those minutes without Barkov on the ice. Still off the charts good

Add Huberdeau he still had 300 mins at even strength where all 3 guys were not on the ice. Numbers are still off the charts good

He’s good it’s just plain and simple.

That would be amazing to snag him.

Yes, I'm well aware that I'm saying this with the benefit of hindsight.

But generally speaking, from now on it might be a good idea to keep a closer eye on local talent. Look at guys who've either grown up here or played junior hockey here, and went on to have noteworthy careers in the NHL. Point, Makar, Hall, Nylander, Getzlaf, Ladd, etc. We can't keep missing out on these guys!

Toews at 50% would cost at least a first round pick.

Yeah, I’m stoked.

Hanifin - Andersson —> we know they’re beyond solid
Kylington - Tanev —> Fantastic pair
Zadarov - Weegar —> punishing like the Zad-Gud pair last year, except a HELL of a lot better because Weegar is an absolute stud.

That’s arguably the best 1-3 pairing trio in the league.

I think Valimaki may push his way into it as well. We’ve got a beautifully deep defensive group.

I'm still upset we didn't draft Point in the 3rd round in the 2014 draft. We wasted that pick on Brandon Hickey instead. How did Point even drop to the 3rd round? I remember him being pretty good at the World Juniors.

Every team missed him a few times at least. It’s not like it was just the Flames.

Even TB was dumb, just less dumb than everyone else.
