Why do people think Treliving will let Huberdeau and Weegar walk to go on a run? Why wouldn't he have just signed Tkachuk to a one year deal and take a run?

Pretty clear from the presser that Trelieving has harder feelings towards Gaudreau than Tkachuk. At least that's what I took away.

As mentioned. Tkachuk is a phenomenal all around player - he’s better than huberdeau, he’s better than Weeger. But to get both and a 1st? Smart play
|
Tkachuk isn’t better than Huberdeau.
Huberdeau has been a PPG player for four straight years. The only thing Tkachuk has over Huberdeau is his age.
Watching his highlights, Huberdeau is better than Gaudreau. He’s the perfect size for a hockey player. He’s able to protect the puck better, his shot is better, he’s stronger, he’s more consistent.
His contract situation actually benefits the Flames - having a $10.5M deal start after Monahan and Lucic expire while getting this year @ $5.9M is a huge win.

Oilers? pfft...I will take them over any other top 2 divisional team thanks

I never said anything about rebuilding. I was addressing the trade specifically and the possible outcomes. One of which was he signs and that should be exciting if we can build around him. But sure read whatever you want.

Even if you are "team rebuild" they have more to trade today than yesterday. There is a reason most people agree.

Great trade and a great return.
That being said Treliving can’t go into the season without an extension for these players. He just can’t risk losing them for nothing.
With these two we are a playoff team or at the very least a bubble team and if we are even close to the playoffs they aren’t getting traded.
So if he gets to training camp and doesn’t have an extension in place he has to move them.
If it gets to that point I would look at eating half their salary. Huberdeau at $3m will bring in a lot of assets, even with 1 year left. Same with Weegar at $1.75m.
Priority one is to sign them, but failing that he has to move them.

Yep, if he signs this is a grand slam and there will be no argument...no sane one anyway

took the best deal by far for a player they had to move, its laughable to suggest otherwise, sorry guy

Makes sense. Matthew conducted himself like a professional.
John looked disrespectful and foolish.

The worst case is we make the playoffs, don't do anything, and they both walk as UFA's. That's the worst case.

Two teams, had to instantly drop out because of Tkachuk’s contract status. If Huberdeau was available, there’d be more teams capable of instantly fitting him into their cap structure. Huberdeau is the better player, and if the same contractual approach is taken, there would be many suitors.

Tre on Tkachuk's list. Said there was 2 teams on there that right away it was clear they wouldn't be able to do a deal with (I think he meant wouldn't be able to fit Tkachuk cap wise).
Also said time was a factor. Cognizant that the player's list could potentially become 1 team if it took too long.

Your input is valuable and keeps things interesting. I wasn't saying that you're making this place less fun. I just found that when I was obsessing too much over asset management, it got to a point where I was personally having less fun.

If the Flames are in a strong position similar to this year at the deadline I think they keep the players. Who knows but that doesn't seem like a crazy prediction. If they deal them at the deadline they are rentals which will return something okay but nothing great. For example you might have been able to trade Tkachuk for Kyrou but there is zero chance you trade Huberdeau for Kyrou as a rental. So there is definitely some risk here if you don't sign Huberdeau. This is not doom and gloom its a realistically possibility that I hope is avoided by an extension this summer.

I choose to believe its directly due to the fact they matched the terms Gaudreau wanted to stay and they reneged. That's the crux of it. After that happened, Treliving realized there never really was a path to retain him and that sting will linger.
