But as we move forward there are 5 names on the Flames that are 2 years to UFA that if you were to retain 50% on their contract would probably become top targets for any team in the league...just need to determine what 2 to use your retention spots on.
With 50% retention:
Elias Lindholm: 2 years at $2.45M
Backlund: 2 years at $2.7M
Toffoli: 2 years at $2.12M
Tanev: 2 years at $2.25M
Hanifin: 2 years at $2.5M
Imagine the return you could get on any of those names when you have the ability to retain so that 2 of them could actually be traded at a cap hit less than $3M.
If you were to shop Lindholm around the league at 2 years at $2.45M you might get a better return than you end up getting for Tkachuk. He would be the best value non-ELC contract in the league at that number.
|
You can only retain money on 3 contracts at any one time.

Only the Calgary Flames would lose the 2nd and 8th leading scorers in the league, keep the 27th, and act like they were still in it to win it.

They might not have franchise players but they have plenty of very good players. They also have a coach that won two cups with out franchise players with the exception of Doughty. St Louis had no franchise players and won a Cup as well.

I agree with dammage79. They aren't going to rebuild yet no matter how many times a message board demands it so I'm really hoping for a nice retool here and a competitive team with a coach who is known for cup runs without generational talent.

He sure wasn't at that time. His numbers were not great under Sutter, if Kopitar was a franchise player that makes Lindholm something beyond that.

Speculation and rumours should be two different threads, for those of us that don’t enjoy sifting through multiple pages of bickering trying to find any recent news.

Kopitar carries his line. Lindholm doesn’t. Most time Lindholm was the 3rd best on his line lol
There is not even a doubt Kopitar was their franchise player.

Kopitar is also 6'3" 225lbs and built for the playoffs. That Kings team was a big heavy rugged team. Flames are not big and slow.

I like options from almost all the rumored teams. NJ, NSH, STL.
It sucks losing two amazing players but the Flames have to do their best to move on with the core they have.
Lindys a keeper. And right now, the one you build around.
|
Augmenting your core through free agency works. Signing them to be your best players when you're otherwise not set up to succeed would be a mistake. Bring those two players to this team and where are we? At best a couple steps behind last year's team?
We can debate whether ownership will finally buck up and rebuild, but the merits of whether we should do it or not, I struggle to find the logic in going with your suggested approach here.
If we're in fact after a Stanley Cup there's almost no conceivable path with a forward group led by Elias Lindholm and Nazem Kadri.

You mean the guy that works his ass off? You must mean the guy that wss nominated for the selke also? He's no slouch. He was given an opportunity and he embraced it. If Calgary doesn't burn it down he's the one you build around. Him.and Andersson give a ####. Markstrom too.

The Kings had Kopitar, Doughty, Carter, Richards, and Quick. Kopitar was absolutely a franchise player by the time Darryl got there.
The Blues had ROR, Tarasenko, Pietrangelo, Schenn, Binnington in net. At least three of those guys, depending how you feel about Binnington, are foundational pieces.
The Flames have Lindholm, who is 27 and two years from UFA.
They have Mangiapane, who is nearly halfway to 27.
Every team has a Dube - he’s nothing special.
Backlund is aging.
Coleman is 32.
Markstrom is 33.
The blue line has good players, but no number 1s, and no high end offense. It is very debatable how good any of these players are away from Gaudreau and Tkachuk.
But what the world’s most short sighted billionaire wants, the world’s most short sighted billionaire gets.

I sure remember when everyone said ROR wasn't a winner...
Not every remaining player on the Flames is trash because Johnny and Tkachuk are gone and people want a teardown.
They will be trash until they are traded then the claims will be that the Flames didnt get enough back for them.

And I'm not the biggest Backlund fan, but he has a give a #### meter also. I really like his edge against Mcdink also.

You don’t think Quick and Kopitar were franchise players? I expect they’ll make good cases for the HOF.

2 remaining Flames finished #2 for major NHL awards
also, assuming they get a haul for Tkachuk and have tons of space...its certainly possible to have a better TEAM next season
Will I guarantee 112 points and 2+ wins in the 2nd round...no, but that is the high water mark after 8 years of trying for the last group.

Depends what they get for Tkachuk, if it is Bratt/Mercer/Kyrou I think they could surprise
