Well it’s kind of a unique situation, Gaudreau didn’t really leave due to conventional pro athlete reasons. We offered the best money, best team, best situation, best legacy, typically that’s more than enough to get it done.
But the player itself in our case, Johnny Gaudreau, has always been family first his whole career and that’s the route he chose. Matthew I suspect would’ve re-signed had Johnny re-signed. I’m also convinced he would’ve signed a long term deal back in 2019 had we showed him the money.
But alas, I think a bunch of anomalies occurred which just happened to conspire against us. Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be. I think the next star will re-sign, assuming Brad Treliving finally learned his lesson after this mess.
Sign your stars as soon as you can and for as long as you can. You don’t always need to nickel and dime everything.

Those two guys just weren't going to do it for us so to the outside looking in with the points that they got this season, it looks like a huge loss for us but I think this is the best scenario for the team.

I’m with ya.
What’s surprising to me is how many people are shocked and acting all doom and gloom. Like wtf are you smoking that this is a low point and embarrassing for the franchise?
The writing was on the wall a long time ago that one or both might, and probably would leave at some point. Like we’re the first team to ever lose a guy to free agency.
And then all the BS about this being a black mark on the franchise and a sign the org is tainted. Gtfo with that crap. Chucky was leaving no matter what Johnny did. This has nothing to do with it.
It’s weird that I see more negativity and obsession with the flames being a failure of an org from their own fans than I do from opposing fans. It’s like a bunch of you are addicted to self loathing.

If Columbus wanted Tkachuk and the instant chemistry that came along with Gaudreau, it would have to cost them a lot more than that. Plus, they would need to dump like $4-5 million in cap space to sign Tkachuk. Laine is not likely to be an easy signing either.
Throw in Nyquist and an unprotected 2023 1st and now you're talking.

I can't believe the failure from an asset management perspective. Relying on hopes an dreams to keep the team together instead of playing the odds and cutting the fuse short.
Now here we are. Can still be salvaged we just have to wait and see what the return for chucky is.

The Flames have nickel and dimed their stars and top six forwards so they they can spend more on bottom six forwards, over 30 UFA’s and third pairing dman. It is not an approach I would try again.

I won’t boo JG but I will boo the Turtle. I hope Lucic gets a chance to level MT.

We should trade him to Columbus for Gaudreau. I hear that guy is pretty good.

I'm the opposite, boo Gaudreau and no ill will for Tkachuk. Contract structure is trelivings fault cause he was tight on cap

Oh yes because 8 x 8 in a small Canadian market is definitely a number that cannot be refused. Kaprizov got $9M last offseason after just 1 season. Treliving definitely needed to try harder than 8 x 8.

Did you forget that Gaudreau looked downright bad during the covid seasons

why? At least Tkachuk is upfront and gives the team a chance to bring in assets for him. He is handling this in a mature way.

I don't want Laine, especially under Sutter. If they want Tkachuk AND Calgary to take on a cap dump like Nyquist, they better cough up Kent Johnson + or beat it.

Yeah, it's more than what most players would do. He also hasn't demanded a trade or threatened to hold out. He just gave the team almost a whole calendar year notice about his intentions. He also apparently gave them a list of teams he would re-sign for, which likely increases his value.
It sucks for sure, but I respect him for being a man about it.

For a small Canadian market team like the Flames this is absolutely terrible and we better build through the draft to have any chance of ever winning a championship again. Even then, you likely lose your superstars after their ELCs so this really could be the death of hope for teams like us.
With the added emphasis on sports gambling, I think being a hockey fan 5-10 years from now is going to be a completely different thing than what we grew up with.

Agreed!
Some GMs get this and don't let fantasies and emotions play in. And their teams tend to stay relevant. Or at least well-stocked.

Loob returned home at 28.
Lidstrom came very close to leaving the NHL when he started a family in his late 20s. Wanted to raise his kids in Sweden. Had to be talked out of it by Ulf Samuelsson.
