This is a blessing in disguise. We lost two players that I believe wouldn’t have reproduced their magic to the same level again. Even if both stayed.

That magic included another less than stellar off season. JG less so that Chucky but both not what you want for 10MM each.

I think Markstrom needs to be shopped as well. He is only coming down and a GM may bet on the Vezina nod as a marker of elite. Which he can be but dude is cursed against the Oilers of all teams. We need to beat them to go anywhere for the next few years.

The only question, full rebuild or re-tool. Tough call. Getting 1st overall next year would set us up but its a long long shot. Re-Tool not sure I want Tre on that, but his drafting has been the best the Flames have done. So maybe him not touching any FA will allow him to focus on his strengths

Johnson (top point getter in the OHL D+1), Stankoven (third in points in the WHL D+1) and Gurianov (toolsy, just had a disappointing season, but bounceback candidate) is still the best potential offer out there.
I actually thought Robertson would be a nice piece coming back if the Flames could ink him. But he's also an American kid (though not a college kid). He is an RFA with no rights though.

Me too but the issue is salary cap for the Rangers.

Question maybe already answered here.

If we were going for the full rebuild... wouldn't of we hoped someone would of given him an offer sheet? Wouldn't that be a higher haul in terms of rebuild options then what we can trade for?

Doesn't going for the trade imply the flames are hoping for a band aid swap?

I don't know. He seems pretty easy to get off his game.

Well, sure, but hope isn't much to go on, and a lot of teams don't have the assets to make an offer sheet.

Ok, thank you- wouldn't of it made more sense then to wait to the last possible date to file? I thought they did it a little early.

Or offer sheets only can occur after that date?

Good GM's lock up their good young players when they have the hammer, for some reason Treliving stopped doing that.
It's exactly what Tampa did.

They gave Kucherov 3 years at $4.8M the same offseason we locked up Gaudreau for 6 years, and they gave Point 3 years at $6.75M the same offseason we signed Tkachuk for 3 years. Seems to have worked out fine for them.

Winning and marketplace makes a big difference.

The sad part is that Flames actually had a really good season...and it still didn't make a difference.

It's like flipping a coin. It's either he's right or he's wrong. It just makes him look less of an idiot when he is right for once I think a lot of us predicted that outcome.

I mostly just feel bad for the Ben Jones and Kevin Rooney's of the world. Came here looking to compete next year.. feels bad man.

The Flames have a huge opportunity to load up in a stacked draft.

2 possibilities I see are:

1. Retool. This would likely require at 1-2 major pieces coming in. Guys like Tarasenko and Huberdeau. I don't think I like this idea. We all know the Flames' history on committing to rebuilds. The Flames also have basically all of the pieces they need to contend....except a couple of star forwards. So the team may feel pressured to cram some option B in, which likely won't work out.

2. Total rebuild. The Flames have a relatively large amount of guys that could bring back potentially 1sts or descent prospects: Toffoli, Coleman, Lindholm, Tanev, Markstrom, etc...then question becomes how deep do you go, do you move out guys like Hanifin or possibly Anderson and Mangiapane. The Flames could find themselves with many firsts in a deep draft.

The Flames should also be showcasing some of their trade bait, that likely has repressed numbers due to be being buried in the Gaudreau show. For example, turn Toffoli back into a 30 goal/60 point player.

ha.. i'm sure they are more than happy they'll get to play most games rather than sitting in a press box.

I'd try to avoid American born players if possible, especially if they'd be leaving a contender and large market like the Rangers (and remember that Miller has to re-sign after next year, so who's to say he won't try and leave after 1 season). Sure, they may not be like Gaudreau or Tkachuk, but what kind of American player would be willing to play for Calgary right now?

Personally, if I were entertaining trade offers from the Rangers, I'd be looking at Othmann as a minimum. That kid's going to be a star.
