Regarding Strickland comment that he guarantees that Tkachuk will end up a Blue by 2023-2024 season:

I very doubt this; Tkachuk was open to signing a long term extension with Calgary until Johnny left (he might still be open to it somewhat). There are most likely a couple of teams he would sign with, having only team that you are willing to sign with is an extremally terrible negotiating tactic and Tkachuk understands that. It is in his best interest to be open to signing with multiple teams, otherwise Blues will just underpay him, he is looking for 10+ per year most likely and there is no reason for Blues to pay that if he wont play anywhere else.

He will most likely say that he will sign with 5-10 teams and then just direct himself more towards the Blues, but also he will definitely be open to singing in Ottawa for example, he is very close to his brother, similar to New Jersey too where the GM is his uncle. They were trying to trade for him prior to the draft so they must have known he was open to signing with him.

I won't be surprised if he ends up with the Blues but saying it is "guaranteed" is stupid, this is just his most preferred destination.

Maybe it's our turn to fleece them.

Problem is that the Leafs do not have any assets that would amount to a fleecing unless the Flames decided to go all in on a rebuild and get like 3 draft picks and 2 or 3 prospects. Even their prospects are b-level in my opinion.

I think this is Tkachuk to a T. He wants that C, he wants to be the guy, he has the ability. I think he should be capitalizing on that 40 g 104 p season and signing long term. I want it to be with us, because any return will probably be underwhelming and I think it's on the cusp of being that guy. He's only 24.

Matthew Tkachuk has notified the Calgary Flames that he won’t be re-signing with the club, multiple sources tell The Athletic, making a trade of the 24-year-old All-Star forward likely to happen soon.

Tkachuk has not officially asked for a trade, but the fact that the restricted free agent is unwilling to make a long-term commitment to Calgary would be the driving force behind the decision to move him now.

In addition to making the Flames aware that he won’t be re-signing with the organization that picked him at No. 6 in the 2016 NHL Draft, Tkachuk has supplied them with a list of teams with whom he would agree to a long-term contract, according to multiple sources. Tkachuk does have some power over where he might land, given that teams likely won't want to pay as large of a trade price for him as a rental.

One source familiar with Tkachuk’s list said that St. Louis, Vegas, Florida, Nashville and Dallas are options. New Jersey and the New York Rangers are also among the other teams that have expressed interest in the past.

We need to bring that 'The world has gone to crap and there's little we can do to fix it' thread from the off-topic board to the main board.

The #2 pick would have sufficed.
Now they need to find a trade that will suffice and hope to land a lottery pick.
Wright would have been a good start to a rebuild. Now they are a year behind.

If that's truly the case, then St. Louis is the last team where he will find that. That's 100% system based hockey. It's a deep roster where no one is special. Tarasenko, who is a lot more polite than Tkachuk, is butting heads with that style. I can't see Tkachuk handling that long-term.

I'd much rather have Kyrou + 1st than the #2 pick last year.

Honestly if he has told the team that, including what teams he'd be willing to sign long-term with - he's handling it in a mature and professional way that will allow his current team to get some good value.

Good on him. I have zero issue with that.
