But then they couldn't trade him all year, which would suck if the team ends up having to be a seller. If it was a 1 year deal at his qualifying rate, it wouldn't be worth the compensation.

because another GM would have luck convincing players to stay who do not want to be in calgary?

I think the Flames would rather get players than picks

He had the option of trading them when they had value. Lots of people saw this coming, especially with Tkachuk.

Do you think the rest of the roster has a pulse on what Matthew had been planning to do? If the speculation is right, he's never intended on signing long-term with the Flames and always wanted to head back south. With Big Z signing and making comments about a bright future in Calgary, having a chip on their shoulders, plus the recent mention of Bread hoping to sign long term, it seems weird they would be that optimistic about wanting to be here if it's been known that BOTH star players were trying to skip town asap.

I think Tkachuk is going to re-sign long term with the Flames and will be the future captain. I've just got a gut feeling that he's a very smart business minded guy and realizes that now is his time to sign a lucrative long-term deal. I also think he likes the Flames with or without Johnny and will throw a huge hit next time they play against each other.
The best two options for Tkachuk are a long term deal with the Flames or a sign and trade. Anything else is a major loss for Tkachuk after the year he's had.
My guess is 9.7 x 8.

In that case, there's absolutely no way they don't make the AAV $9.76M

I was thinking more along the lines of trolling McDavid, but trolling Johnny works too.

All signs pointed towards yes. No one should be at fault for thinking the same. It was Johnny who went dumb *** mode when it finally came down to making a decision. The funny part is he didn’t HAVE to sign on July 13.

Both players said the right things that they love playing in Calgary and would like to stay. The reality is that anytime a player says something like this it's pure lip service and it's unfortunate really because as we have seen a lot of Flames fans bought those comments as sincere. Tkachuk in particular was always planning on leaving as soon as he could and was flat out lying to media and fans. I not going to hate on the players for pursuing their careers in cities they wanted to live but I have more respect for the PLD approach as he's not lying to Jets fans and he's also doing the organization a favor by giving them a heads up and plenty of opportunity to plan on a future without the player on their roster.

Gaudreau did a tad more than lip service I’d say.

Not sure if this is being said as I'm not really keeping up with this thread, but I think having the worst/oldest arena in the NHL is playing a big role in losing our top players/losing out on potential free agents.

right after the season, I wasn't worried at all. All signs pointed towards John signing long term and I would say he and his family went beyond lip service when they talked about staying in Calgary. At least that's how I remember it, and that ultimately made it such a kick in the nuts when hen left the way he did.
