Of all the actions that have gone on in this case, a mother calling the police to protect her girl who wasn't capable of protecting herself is hardly what should be called criminal.

I'm really only catching up with this, but I got to say that Rick Westhead and Katie Strang are awesome. Did a great job reporting the Kyle Beach case back then and doing it again with this one ... I'm happy there's sports journalists like them out there who are not afraid to touch these stories and show the public what goes wrong behind the scenes.

That was my first thought, but I wonder if that timeline makes much sense.
Actually now I'm just confused about the timeline...June 19, 2018 was a Tuesday...did this happen Monday overnight into Tuesday? John Doe's text references a Sunday...
I wonder how quickly a police investigation like this would move. I wonder if part of the Mom's urgency was that players were from all over and likely leaving soon. After Mom reports to police, what would be the next steps? Presumably speak to the victim...I guess if she wasn't cooperative there wouldn't be much else except maybe talking to the accused to see if they slip up, and otherwise no further action?
In a perfect world you'd try to interview multiple suspects at the same time, but that's probably tough to manage from a resource standpoint.

Four years after the fact, some reasonable doubt with the texts, would be incredible if there was ever any conviction.
But if a player was found to have engaged in sexual activity in that room with the 7 others, would that amount to “guilty” in your eyes? Obviously the alleged gang rapists will say it was consensual, she says it wasn’t.
I’m just curious because it would be enough for me. I’d be fine if the 8 players involved never play another game once they are named.
Open question to anyone who wants to respond.

I think names will undoubtedly surface eventually, and from there I would assume you can expect more statements, more cover, and probably some "I was just there, I didn't participate".
I'll go to the facts to render down my opinion. There were 8 male athletes and 1 intoxicated female in a hotel room. Not even in my college "dude-bro" days would I consider it alright to spend more than about 4 seconds in that room. IF some speculation is true (1 on 1 consensual encounter followed by more being invited) that means the guy who she gave permission to and then invited his buddies for a spin should never play hockey again. Absolutely abhorrent. Second, the other 7 that walk in and see the situation and shrug their shoulders should also never be allowed to lace up again. Oh, you didn't actually have intercourse with her? You just sat there and watched? You're dead to me too and a different kind of scummy.
I don't care if it's 1 tweener pylon or 8 superstars involved, if they were in the room, get them away from the sport that I enjoy promoting to my girlfriend's two daughters.

I don't understand how, in 2018, 8 players thought a drunk girl "consenting" to sex with 8 of them was a good idea and not one of them said "hold up, let's get this girl home." If you want to gang bang someone, doing it to a drunk person who thought they were just going with one guy is not the way to do it. I mean, there's probabably a long list of people who'd happily consent to a gang bang with 8 hockey players, and would sign documents stating as such.

They knew exactly how bad it was, which is why they asked if she called the cops. And filmed a “consent” tape…

The text message is really strange, but is that guy #1 who might have a legitimate consent argument? Did some of the 8 watch and do nothing? All of it is terrible behaviour, but I think there is still a distinction that needs to be made between "Weinstein Terrible" and "Louis CK Terrible". We just don't know enough for me to say that all 8 should be out of an NHL job forever.
|
I hear what you’re saying, but Louis CK didn’t stand by and watch a woman get raped.

With every player that comes out and denies any involvement in this, the 8 that were involved start sweating more and more profusely.

Can you imagine what these players personal lives look like right now. Girlfriends, friends, moms, etc… I can’t believe we haven’t had all but 8 come out and say they weren’t involved. They must all be getting asked about it constantly.

Even the ones who weren't there likely heard about it.
As far as the whole situation, this definitely happens more than is reported, and each time it's brought to mainstream media both makes me frightened and at the same time hopeful it will decrease in frequency as my kids grow up.

I wouldn't want my kids playing Junior Hockey in Canada. There are too many of these terrible stories. On top of that, you take a 16 year old from Calgary and he winds up having to play in Brandon, and half way through the season he gets traded to Portland. What are we doing to our kids?
There should be no trades in Junior Hockey, just like in university sports. Clearly, they only care about developing NHL players and don't care about all those who don't make it.

Yeah that statement from Dube’s agent was not good IMO.
The most defensive of the statements and doesn’t say Dube was not involved, just that he didn’t commit any wrongdoing, and proceeds to group him in with the rest of the players who they say were all cleared of wrongdoing.

Agreed. My first reaction to that statement from Dube’s agent is that Dube was one of eight players because players who were not there just say so. Kyrou is a recent example.

No way Dube can play for the Flames again. What another colossal #### up by the organization.

It ain't looking good for some of them. Going off the denial statements, you can almost pretty much figure out who the 8 were. Of course, some of them could be lying as well.
