If Ottawa and Jersey are still in the mix, those at least have a shot at #1 overall.

Looking back a year, everyone always thought Tkachuk was the bigger flight risk than Gaudreau. With deadlines based around arbitration, it would have been an awful idea to sign Tkachuk for one year and then let him "make up his mind" at the end of the year.
Management should not have handled this any differently, even with Gaudreau walking....although maybe they would have. So perhaps the silver lining here, is that they get value for Tkachuk or re-sign him, as opposed to just acting like softies and letting him walk, which is what may have happened if Gaudreau had signed.

It's not 1 year of Tkachuk it's 8 or 9 IMO
I think he knows 104 is the high water mark for his career, he may not want to commit to the Flames but he wants to cash in.

Didn't even realize he might be involved, certainly something to look at. Great player though.

Tkachuk is an elite player.
The return has to include an elite player, an elite prospect, or an elite pick. If not, it's a bad trade.

Such a smart play it is going to set the organization back a decade or more. Brilliance. Sheer brilliance.

That ship has sailed. No way they cough him up. Blues need a really good young blueliner. Dominated the AHL in his short stint and didn't look out of place in the games he played. Going to be a fixture on their blue line for a while.

More excessive dramatics.
The system is self-correcting. When crap happens, or you make bad decisions, you get higher draft picks. And, in this case, cap space.
Is it a setback this year? Of course. Ten years? LOL.

A bit dramatic. Gaudreau last summer wouldn’t have fetched a ton, neither would have 2 weeks of negotiating rights this summer. It’s like saying what we gave up for Toffoli set us back a decade or more. Easy to wave our hands around but it just ends up looking silly.
So, the risk of not getting that return vs the potential of making a run with an established, cup winning coach? Smart play. Sounds pretty dumb to instead trade the guy for a middling return instead of going for a run but if that’s brilliance to you, by all means.

So they should have moved Johnny after the 19-20 season when he had 58 points and was a -10? That would have been a sell-low move to say the least...

I can understand the dramatic tenor as the star players leaving the Flames for greener pastures has ALMOST never worked out in the Flames favor. As we all know the 90s were some dark dark times. Obviously different conditions now, but seeing star players leave for middling returns is something of a rite of passage for the Flames, and leaves me skeptical that THIS time it will work out.
