Why would they want to wait until next season if they could have him now?
Also, as long as there is more than one team he's willing to sign with (Blues - hometown, Sens - cap'n bro, Devils - Dad's cousin is the GM, etc.), if you know you're on the list, you'd want to get it locked down rather than taking the risk he changes his mind over the next year.
He could fall madly, deeply in love with a Calgary girl during training camp and decide this is where he wants to stay after all.

For STL there is a lot of value to having him this season too.
Tarasenko, ROR, and Barbashev are UFAs - so this could be a great shot to win another cup before those guys leave.
Thomas and Kyrou are RFAs - Thomas already signed a big deal that kicks in next season, Kryou will be due for a raise.

Fair enough. Hopefully MT is looking at 3 or 4 teams in that case!

I certainly don't see any subject as doom and gloom. I just don't wear rose colored glasses. The management of these two particular players has been poor which, to mean, means management and ownership screwed up. Something has to change or we'll never see real success in this city.
I find it funny that you were so, so wrong on Johnny yet anyone who doesn't drink the kool-aid and agree with you is someone who should cheer for another team.

First you define what a realist is, now you toss around rose coloured glasses and kool-aid
He's more positive than you, no doubt about it, but I don't think anyone of us get to tell others where the exact perfect middle is and lay claim to it.

In a report, Tkachuk just finished telling Gaudreau (paraphrasing) "Columbus is a lot like St-Louis, very laid back a nice place to live". And said how happy he was for Gaudreau. He clearly likes St-Louis.

I'll preface this by saying I am/was a much bigger Johnny fan than a Chucky fan, but if Matthew doesn't want to sign here long term, then he can GTFO too.

Brady has a lot of core players around him. And just cause they are brothers doesn't mean they think the same.

I'm sure he likes it fine. But I doubt he's going to take less money to go there.

If that's true I sure hope that losing both Tkachuk and Gaudreau triggers a full rebuild. You can't patch that kind of hole with a band-aid fix but I'm sure ownership will give Tre a mandate to limp in with an 8th-9th place finish.

Tear it to the ground. Sutter probably leaves too, if it is a rebuild.

Remember when we were worried about how we were going to keep both Tkachuk and Gaudreau? Never saw this coming.

I imagine they will bandage with whoever comes over in the trade, and then sign a Kadri/Niedoriter type to add.
Just please don’t flip assets to trade and extend Miller.

They heavily overpaid based on his prior performance.
Also, keep in mind because it was his second contract, they controlled his rights for the first 4 years of that contract anyway, so they only bought an extra 3 years than where the Flames are if they take a one-year arbitration ruling. So, it's not that "long term". He won't even be 30 when the contract expires.

We literally just saw it happen with another US born player, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw it again.
