I believe Calgary didn't want to deal with the release of his book while playing for them. That's just my thoughts though.

Well if Tkachuk ends up signing long term and we can get Mangi and Kylington extended to good value contracts as well it becomes an intriguing lineup. Timing will be everything with the few remaining big fish that are out there, as much as I’m weary of a Kadri overpay I think a Tkachuk + Kadri duo could be a nightmare for teams. Not sure where I sit really but something hopefully gives soon here and we finally see a direction this off season.

Tkachuk is in such an awkward situation. I’m sure he’d like to go right to the edge of UFA to try and get more dough. But on the other hand if he wants to cash in on his career year, and has any concerns that without Gaudreau his numbers will drop, he has to do it now.

Not sure about the rules. Is Friday the day Tkachuk has to decide about signing his QO? If so could be a very interesting week for flames. If it’s me he either signs an extension by Friday or is traded . Can’t have a Johnny repeat.

If Friday comes and goes and he doesn’t accept his QO then he is negotiating with the flames or considering signing an offer sheet. There doesn’t have to be full resolution by Friday but it will eliminate the $9M walk to free agency.

Or he could simply wait, and hold out until he is traded, and sign a deal with his new team.
I doubt he signs his QO, as that ties his own hands in that regard.
I expect he'll either sign a new long term deal with Calgary or force a trade to a team he wants to sign a contract with.
But playing on a one year contract where he cannot sign a long term deal until Jan 1 is not in his or Calgary's best interests. He would only do that if he is adament about testing UFA.

If Chucky does choose the 1 year QO I think the screams from the fanbase to axe Treliving will be deafening. He will have very few supporters left in the fanbase and would be having the worst summer imaginable

Players preferring to play in their home country especially after the last couple years is hardly Brads fault

Between Gaudreau and Tkachuk I thought for sure Tkachuk was the much greater eventual flight risk.
Gaudreau wanting out of Canada so bad that he willingly went to Columbus instead, has me almost 100% certain Tkachuk is all but gone too.

I expect the pandemic played a part in this, although it is hard to be certain.

Holding out won’t do anything for his longs term value, and will decrease his stats even further.
I agree, a one year contract is also not good for him. It’s either get traded to someone who will sign him quickly or sign with the Flames. Anything else is a huge roll of the dice. I can’t foresee another 100 point year.

So why not get in front of it and get something for them? Walking your stars to free agency is a recipe for disaster. I hope he doesn’t make that mistake with Tkachuk

Now I could be wrong but I think that now that Johnny is gone, Tkachuk will see this as his team and will sign long term. But I have been wrong before.

Just like his old man, Chucky needs a good ol' Canadian girl to lock him down. Preferably in Calgary of course.
Hindsight, but Calgary fans should have sent the harem of 20 something year olds to his place daily.

They may have known an offersheet was coming maybe?
Unsure how this sets up angles in the negotiations other than they knew an offer sheet was coming.
Plus this also guarantees they pay him 9m minimum, do we know if it's only for 1 year or 2? How does club Arbitration work?

He can’t hold out for one thing. Aside from that it just gives them an extra month.
It can only be a one year contract in this type of arbitration.

From Tkachuk's perspective, this is a very good outcome, vs. him electing arbitration.
He's now guaranteed at least $9M, and can negotiate or argue for more.
He can also sign a long term contract with the Flames or as part of a trade to another team.
Or he can sit on his one year deal and become a UFA, even if the Flames trade him.
I think this is also better for the Flames, as it removes the rather slight possibility of Tkachuk electing his QO, or the even more unlikely offer sheet. It would really establish his intention to likely test UFA, as he couldn't negotiate a long term deal until Jan 1, 2023.
