Well in regards to the post I quoted the idea is that the Flames held on to Gaudreau too long, and that good teams would have sold on him. I question that, good teams find ways to keep their star players.
Maybe it wasn’t in the cards in this scenario. But it’s not that different from Tampa with Stamkos, or Colorado with Landeskog and in the end those guys found a way and the player decided to stay.
Honestly with Gaudreau gone, and coming off a good season I think the Flames could have potentially look at moving Backlund, Tanev, and Toffoli over the next year. Those guys are all on the wrong side of 30 with 2 years or less left on their deals.

Sorry, was agreeing with you and adding on. I find a lot of the simping, yes-men, man up, fit your wife around your career, etc talk to be pretty cringe. I don’t know a happy individual in an even half way decent relationship that talks like that, though, so I’m kind of just writing it off as coming from guys whose opinions about relationships and women probably have pretty questionable reference points.
Truthfully, I don’t know why you bothered responding to them lol.

He changed his twitter bio/avatar. But no new tweets yet
Hasn't touched his insta
If I were his parents, I'd be giving him hell right now with his complete lack of acknowledgement of the team that gave him a chance.

Which was weird at the time because I’ve never seen an agent do that, and it actually potentially hurt his own clients negotiating power.

I forgot that quote too. So obviously Gross was blindsided. I think he should dump Gaudreau. Who wants a client that kills your good faith negotiations? He has one Gaudreau (who won’t really need him for 8 years). He deals with a bunch of GMs.

In the end it was a choice between Columbus, NYI and NJ after Philly told them they were out. His wife’s preferred location seemed to be a heavy influence in the decision. Rosters and on ice future slights against NYI. Newark slights against NJ. 1/3 of the year they’ll be back in Philly a lot. 1/3 Johnny will be on the road for away games and when home location doesn’t seem super critical to him. Meredith and their child will be the ones spending the most time in Columbus so it’s a perfectly reasonable choice.
|
It’s a reasonable choice about which they should have not misled the Flames.

Ouch. Calgary takes the L here.
This is a tough pill to swallow for me.
|
I don’t think Murray Edwards drove the outcome. He got involved to make the final pitch. This happens a fair bit I think. Players like to know that the owners are eager. But when Gaudreau played games Edwards rightly took offence.

Wasn't talking about free agents, specifically. GIO, Brodie and Iggy are all guys we might have gotten some assets , but for various reasons they were difficult to move as they were making valuable contributions to the team. I believe the Flames did try to move Monahan, which I think is a good example of trying to maximize a player that may be on the downswing. Flames to use these assets to maximize potential returns for the long term.

This is what I don’t get. We’ve known for 12 months that Gaudreau was likely going to become a UFA and likely going to want to return to the U.S. Fans knew it. The media knew it. I can’t imagine Flames management are so dumb that they didn’t know it.
So why is everyone shocked that he did that just, and are now gossiping like a clutch of hens over what his motivation was? His motivation was to return to the U.S. and sign a huge contract. Case solved.

While true, I have a hard time believing his excitement after that presser.

‘Likely’ is not the same as ‘certainly’.

He gave up $16 million of an even huger contract, and acted like an ass while doing it. That's the shocking part.

Forget motivations, why, leaving $ on the table and etc.
I just dislike how this went down and the position he put the team in by not being completely upfront and candid about his position.
Best case we could have traded his rights, worst case we could have prioritized Chucky and others.
I'm kind of surprised at some reactions saying this was a totally forseen eventuality. If that's so then he obviously didn't make that known to Flames brass and waited until the 11th hour to totally paralyze and handcuff them, full stop.
He's not the enemy because or why he left, it's how he left.

Yeah, I don't really buy this. It wasn't this cut and dry. His quotes at the end of the season could have still delivered that lying cliche bs punch he likes to spout yet not quite have over-exaggerated his "love for Calgary" lol
I mean come on, go watch his end of year pressers again and tell me you Nostradamussed this one. I don't think so. He could have said a million other acceptable answers and kept the peace and not wax on poetic (lie) about how much he liked Calgary.
You're forgetting this team made him. He is too.

The people I feel bad are his Family on social media. Flames fans are getting vicious on Johnny's decision with them.
I've always had great interactions with Jim and he's still openly talking to flames fans when he could easily just shutter it down.

I feel like he was forced to leave Calgary by someone. Body language said it all. I hope he can handle whatever emotions he's battling over how this all played out.

Has anyone speculated that Johnny had a side piece and his wife made him leave or have we moved past that part of the 12 steps to player loss

Also it was clear that Gaudreau was undecided throughout this process, that was out in the media the entire time so I’m sure the Flames knew too.
The problem is if Gross and the Flames thought they had a deal on Tuesday if the Flames hit a certain price, and then Gaudreau went back on his word.
I’m not sure how Gross is supposed to anticipate that. If what that one poster had is the true situation then that’s on Gaudreau and not Gross.

Whatever kernels of truth exist in the rumour we've heard (obviously only 1-side of the story) I think it's safe to assume there was a breakdown in communication somewhere - between Johnny and Gross, Gross and Flames, or potentially Johnny and wife. I think it's a fool's errand to assign blame with such limited info...I'm not even convinced any blame is necessarily warranted anywhere
I think back to buying our first house...it's a pretty stressful day and throughout the negotiation a million question marks are running through your mind whether its the right house or not, etc - it can be a total rollercoaster. Now multiply the value of the deal by 100 with a lot more time pressure. It's kinda surprising things don't go off the rails more often.

Oh come on. I don’t like how he left but he has lots of influences and reasons we might know nothing about. I don’t mind speculation in scenarios of how talks with the Flames occurred but the personal stuff is just so disgusting.
