Looking at the goalies in Edmonton the last two years vs Campbell, and comparing them to Markstrom as well.
Campbell isn't a huge improvement on Smith, but he is on Koskinen.
As much as we liked to make fun of Mike Smith, he's been just as good as Markstrom the last two seasons if you look at the big picture.
I'd say Campbell is slightly worse than Smith and Markstrom but might not be as far off as you'd think. Markstrom has an advantage in he's a true number 1 by GP, where the other two are more tandem goalies.
Looking at the last two seasons:
Save Percentage:
Smith: .919
Campbell: .916
Markstrom: .915
Koskinen: .901
Goals Saved Above Average:
Markstrom: 21.99
Smith: 21.22
Campbell: 17.79
Koskinen: -12.71

Now they need to sign or replace Yamamoto and Puljujarvi. Then we'll see what their cap space looks like.

Kane + Smith + Nurse= $9.9M
This year:
Kane + Campbell + Nurse = $19.35M
Yikes!

This is just the 2022 version of signing Markstrom at 6x6.
No better, no worse.
You have a team with a desperate need for goaltending and you have no choice but to overpay for it in free agency.
You’ll get criticized but still better than being left with nothing.

Let me know if Campbell is second in Vezina voting within a couple years after signing for 7th place (tied with Binnington) in goalie AAV.

Campbell has good career numbers but 75% of his career games are as a back up. Going into this year his career high in games was 31.
This year he was good but he fell apart mid season. 49 games too much for him? He’s yet to prove he can handle 50 starts in a season
Is Skinner going to get 32 starts?
That’s a bit risky imo

As risky as markstroms contract was… he did #1 G things.. Campbell only had the Toronto hype machine behind him, before he was a backup.

Doubt it. The last time a team was fined for this was the Canucks and they only got fined 50k:
