Last time I checked Calgary was ranked the 3rd best city to live in out of the entire world. Cost of living isn’t that bad, it’s gorgeous with the Rocky Mountains in your back yard. Winters aren’t bad these days especially with all the Chinooks etc. I’d take living in Calgary over any American city these days given the state of everything in the States atm. Just my opinion though.

The guy, by most accounts, left a considerable amount of money on the table from Calgary and New Jersey (maybe others?). We can see that his decision was not about money and not about winning - maybe it was a family and human decision. Not a single person would have held it against Gaudreau if it came out that his wife had a job opportunity back east so he was leaving to be closer to her.

Not a one.

What people resent, and will resent for the rest of his career, is being lied to for months, and then finding out that no amount of money would’ve been enough.

It makes the city look awful, that you literally couldn’t pay Gaudreau enough to stay here.

It makes people feel stupid, and used.

He doesn’t get to use his family as a shield now - that’s cowardly. But then, so is everything else about the way he handled this.

He was happy to string along the team in the hopes of getting as much money as possible out of UFA. It backfired, and he now has to go to Columbus.

Which is what he deserves.

He knew that months ago. Francis has been saying he wants out for three years.

Washington is fine to visit as far as monuments and history, but no one with money actually lives in it. For good reason. Miami is (sorry for this) just kinda sticky. Maybe I haven’t been to the best spots.

Yes Columbus is much closer to the Philadelphia area than Calgary. But I wouldn't say it's close enough to see family every weekend or whatever. A 2-hour flight, including security and baggage claim, etc. is not much better than a 4-hour flight.

I mean, ya, if you want to use totally incorrect numbers it isn't a big difference.

30 mins to PHI airport
90 min flight

vs.

90 mins to Newark airport
4.5-5 hr flight (when you travel such a great distance the prevailing winds actually matter)
Another 15-45 minutes for customs and baggage claim (because you probably staying a lot longer and might need a checked bag)

More like 2 hrs vs. 7 hrs (we'll just assume the final leg from airport is similar) and 2 hr time zone change.

It’s not. Not remotely.

I grew up in Calgary and live in a major US city in the northeast. Most Canadians who haven’t lived in the US can’t appreciate how remote Canada feels to Americans, how far north, how isolated, etc. For someone who grew up in the northeast corridor of the US, the Canadian prairies may as well be the dark side of the moon.

That’s true culturally as well as geographically. Whatever criticisms Canadians may have of the US — and many are warranted — it’s a place with a powerful identity and sense of history. I can see a US player feeling a little lost in a place like Calgary very easily.

Finally, wealthy American cities are a pleasure to live in — culturally dynamic, diverse, vibrant and full of amenities. Columbus is small, but it’s a great, lively town, very young, full of history, terrific architecture and major civic investment. So let’s please drop this ‘Calgary is a better city’ nonsense. To you, maybe. Not to him. And that’s totally justified.

I’m just having fun pondering. Avoiding the city debate.

In reflection, I thought it was weird Gross tweeted out, Calgary did all they could. At the time, figured just an agent doing something on behalf of his client, but unless I’m mistaken not something you usually see.

Now I’m wondering if Gross was almost tweeting that because he thought Johnny was crazy not to take the offer, and it was a bit of message about himself. Like I got Calgary to put it on the table, but my crazy client has decide to do something dumb here. When you see what happens tomorrow, know I got him max value and he’s off the depend for family reasons?

This is just me having fun speculating and coming up with my own crazy thoughts. Also Glee.
